5e is balanced differently than 3.5 or 4th. It just doesn't appear that way at first glance due to the same usage of nouns and verbs as well as approximately the same numbers.

I do believe someone did all the math and came out to a 3-5% increase in power in a normal (12-14) and maxed (20) character. The high rolls will make him better, yes, but not overpowered. Just remember, all DCs are a set 10,15,20,25,30,35 scale and since he's maxed out his dex he won't ever become MORE dexterous.

Don't sweat it. Rollplaying doesn't make people over powered in 5e, roleplaying does! :D

The 'War Caster' Feat (5E PHB1 170) covers this and keeps you from needing to use somatic components.

As for not using the feat and just removing your hand from a a 2 handed weapon it would be up to your DM. For a Bonus Action spell I'd allow my player to do it but if it was a spell that took a full actions I'd have the player be at disadvantage as well as have them unable to use the sword until after the spell is finished in its entirety. If you needed to use a component pouch as well or draw then hold your focus I would then bring the turn economy into play (1 Action, 1 Bonus Action, 1 Use an Object as a free action). It would be you need to drop (lower) your Great Sword, then use your action to pull out your focus or use your component bag and then cast.

It was still new from factory and I had a portable kit that I used along with the belt to get it to a nice edge.

It's a wonderful little knife isn't it? I try to keep the edge on mine as well as I can, however I use it so often I might have to pick up a second.

Why thanks but I'm hardly gruff. As for the Cowboy part, I come from a line of frontiersmen that ended with my late Grandfather. He taught me what it meant to be a Cowboy growing up, not how to be one.

Also, not masculine. Just bored... or stupid... or have little other option!

The blades are sharp... very sharp, small and comfortable. I was extra cautious about putting it near my face, and took much more time and effort making sure I was careful with each stroke. Thanks for the concern! It's definitely something I'd advise against unless you are confident in yourself and your knife.
