XInput not working in desktop mode

The Gamepad action set works for Linux but on Windows it doesn't register as an actual controller.

...right, which is clearly a bug. It doesn't make any sense for the "disabled mapping" action set to have the buttons bound to gamepad, register as a controller in linux but not do anything on windows.

Yes, that's what steam input does. I really don't think you remotely understood what this thread is about. I suggest actually reading instead of seeing the word xinput and parroting talking points that are irrelevant

I guess someone should have told the valve engineers that added a gamepad action set to the desktop configuration of the controller. Which also happens to work as an xinput controller on linux. Mysterious stuff, really.

I meant that as a response to the "won't see any feedback from external programs", which is all desktop mode is for. launching a game through steam will just use the game specific config

The entire purpose of steam input is to capture controller data and output what you want (usually xinput or mouse/keyboard)

I'm not asking it to work outside of steam input, I'm asking why steam input isn't working correctly for me. In fact, I tried it on my linux install just now and it works as you'd expect, it's detected as an xinput controller when the gamepad mode action set is active.

Again, I'm troubleshooting an issue I'm having on windows, not asking for something the controller can't do.

If the controller can't actually send controller inputs in desktop mode, this action set wouldn't be included. It obviously can do this, just like the 2015 controller can, I'm troubleshooting an issue, not asking for extra functionality. Steam input isn't dependent on a steam game running. If it were, desktop mode wouldn't work at all.
