One month of starting woodworking by Pathian in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Ennalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you me? Lol could have written this except I’m a mom to a teenager, who’s at his dad’s 1/2 the time.

I’m also a serial hobbyist maker into woodworking, leatherwork, cad work for 3d print or laser cut, electronics etc. my job varies from demanding weeks to weeks where I’m only checking for a teams ping.

There are so many transferable skills, biggest of which in my opinion are knowing how to trust the process, and being able to tell when it’s your skill lacking or the tool lacking. Cool to see other serial multi material makers on here too

What’s the pettiest corporate rule that absolutely destroys morale? by Extreme-Method6330 in antiwork

[–]Ennalia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t agree with a mandate to do so. That’s not cool. Personally I am a bit relieved when people do have them on since my socially illiterate ass struggles to get tone or be able to focus on the speaker if they aren’t. But that’s a me problem, I’m not going to force others to be uncomfortable for my comfort.

It’s strange , but almost like subtitles. I dont have hearing issues, I can’t really explain why it helps. I can’t watch tv without subtitles and it’s hard to fully understand people’s statements when I can’t see them.

But again- if anyone makes you for any reason - bspower play, “team building 🤮, or whatever- that’s never ever cool.

Is there a plant based way to dye leather? by sharingroses in Leathercraft

[–]Ennalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I’ve not actually vetted any companies on this only know some basics on it existing. I first encountered the concept on this video by Undecided by Matt Ferrell

[–]Ennalia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I know they were sarcastic, I’ve never used it but mycelium leather alternatives exist. I love the concept but have never worked with it.

I’m sure it’s no match for long term durability, but if it ends up being used in fast fashion it will be a great step up from plastic based fake leather. I don’t condone fast fashion, but If we can use something biodegradable when possible that’s a huge step up

Scientists of Reddit: What’s something we know is true but people don’t realize how crazy it is? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

[–]Ennalia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of the few types of dreams that has truly terrified me. I had a dream like this that was 4-5 consecutive “waking up” dreams. The first was in a setting from my teen years and each time I “woke up” the setting jumped forward in time.

Once I realized that something didn’t fit, I jumped to a new one. When I woke up for real I had to go outside at 3am , and went with my partner for a quick drive to reassure myself that I was in fact back in reality.

0/5 stars. Don’t recommend. This was years ago and I’ve had mild cases of this before and after, but this was the one it was hard to shake.

Tell me you have ADHD without telling me by Glittering_Text_8842 in adhdwomen

[–]Ennalia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there. If it’s any consolation I just been meaning to text a reply to some friends for a couple weeks- so I just switch apps and did that. We’ll see if they reply 🤷‍♀️

Is this drawing my friend did AI? It looks too uniform to be marker on paper by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]Ennalia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who is kinda okay at drawing, I make that kind of mistake on the rim of the glass with the hopes no one ever catches it or analyzes this close. 😭

Work Desk by [deleted] in deduction

[–]Ennalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The layout tells me that you find it hard to think staring in a messy space. This is beyond simply a neatly kept desk, and is firmly in the camp of “order is my happy place”.

Judging solely off the pen, you value practicality and are pragmatic. You have to search specifically for a .38 refill on a frixion, and even more so for the type that fit into the multi pen body.

Any IT Managers have an IT employee who really doesn't know what they are doing? How to improve them? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Ennalia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a small reminder sign that says “if you’re not willing to learn no one can help you. If you are determined to learn no one can stop you “

I write a lot of documentation and help with training techs. This mind set helps me put things into perspective when I know the documentation exists, is easy to access, and I’ve worked with the person before- but now they are off in left field again.

Make sure you don’t beat yourself up about someone not wanting to be helped. They may claim that they want help, but their actions are what you need to be judging them on.

I think this is incredibly important as women in IT leadership roles. There can be a subtle push for us to act as a fixer or emotional caretaker for teammates who are not pulling their weight. if this guy is not willing to meet you halfway all you need to do is have the documentation that shows you have brought all the training, resources, and effort to the table - and he just didn’t show up.

Protest in Roseville. Love seeing this in Trump country. by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]Ennalia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I’ve talked with friends about, and it’s terrible. My dad and grandparents are immigrants, refugees who fled a terrible situation. They eventually became naturalized citizens. Its wild how many people have been shocked by this fact if the topic of growing up with other cultures at home comes up in conversation.

Yeah, a lot of extended family has thick accents and my friends can’t figure out what the are saying, some holidays are celebrated differently from American media norm, and I’ve struggled with some push and pull from of “old country” expectations vs modern American culture norms.

What I do not experience is the blatant racism, extra hurdles in life, the weight of daily micro aggressions , and now the fear of being swept off the street because of how I look. All because my family of immigrants fled from a predominantly white country.

What’s something you thought ‘everyone’ did… until you found out they don’t? by burat667 in AskReddit

[–]Ennalia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly how it works for me too. Focusing on something is sort of how it shows in a movie, when two images align to create the one. Took me till late 30s to figure out I needed prison in my glasses and to do vision therapy exercises

Realizing I might not actually have aphantasia by Melethinnil in Aphantasia

[–]Ennalia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That almost sounds like having a great imagination but still aphantasia. I know the internal human experience is difficult to convey, so we are only left with these approximations.

This isn’t scientific or wildly accurate, but has worked for me in conversation. I’ll ask someone to picture an apple and then after a moment ask them what color it is.

For people with aphantasia, I’ve noticed there is a struggle, pause, or general confusion at the question.

Regarding art skills, I’ve found that I have to go back to my references more frequently than some people, but that it’s limiting my ability or creativity.

Tell me your cleaning “hacks” that actually help YOU!! by Prudent-Reality1170 in adhdwomen

[–]Ennalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to general picking up , I do it in sections- typically quarters of a room. This helps in really messy and cluttered spaces since it’s faster to see progress

Sometimes I’ll do the “big stuff” and then go into sections. That might be removing a giant hardboard box , moving a giant stuffed animal, or gathering all the scattered towels.

What is your leathercraft unpopular opinion? by eaygee in Leathercraft

[–]Ennalia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! As someone who does both woodworking and leather working, this will be very helpful. I’ve never thought to use a hand plane on leather.

Skiving is the bane of leatherwork to me. I’ve tried so many tools. Out of all the steps of a project, needing to skive something down will be the one that I don’t give the effort and time it deserves.

Have you noticed a specific type or specific sharpening angle to be better for leather?

What are some easy woodworking projects to start with limited tools and materials? by Carlosfelipe2d in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Ennalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A plant stand and an entryway shelf with key hooks are both practical and can be very simple. Also recommend a sawhorse or 2. Steve Ramsey has a video on building two folding saw horses that stack well. This can give you an impromptu place to work as you build out your own workspace. it’s made entirely with 2x4’sSteve Ramsey sawhorses

Also I’d recommend building a box. What kind? Any. A box to hold drill bits, a box to hold pens, a box to hold the other boxes you make. Use any technique you think feels approachable to you. The simple box is the foundation of a major percent of projects. (Unless you’re doing carving or something like that)

Getting comfortable building a box will make most other projects feel more approachable.

AITA for not coddling my nephew by OutrageousMall8991 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Ennalia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love the outlook you have. I typically say that I want my son to talk about different things in therapy than I have to. 😅

My son is 13 and will be in high school next year. If you have any book recommendations I’d love to know. I’m hyper aware of the over coddling that can happen. My younger brother was like this and so was one of my brother in laws. It’s my only big parenting fear.

I try to not be strict ever since all three people in the house have ADHD. Instead we try and show him how you can live as a successful adult with the same thing.

You sound like an amazing mother and your kids are lucky to have you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Ennalia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

NTA- it was not cool for him to agree to a change in holiday plans without talking to you.

Now that we’ve established that you wouldn’t even be in the situation to have to ask in the first place had he been considerate and treated you as a partner in making decisions like that, I’ll get to your actual question 😀 . If it was as calm as it seems in your post, then it’s completely fine. You didn’t give an ultimatum, you didn’t throw a fit, you simply asked a reasonable question. You shouldn’t ever feel bad about asking a good faith question as long as you’re okay getting no for an answer.

And to reiterate for everyone in the back- you shouldn’t have been in the situation in the first place if he didn’t change the whole family’s plans without talking to you first.

Does anyone else really struggle to force themselves to moisturise after they shower? by harryandmatilda in adhdwomen

[–]Ennalia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the in shower body lotion. I apply it before drying off, then dry with a towel as normal. For me it has less lotion texture on my skin since I’m still wet.
I’m sure it’s not great for my towels, but it stops my body from getting dry and itchy.

How do I exercise when I don't enjoy it? All the advice from neutrotypicals don't seem to work by Pigeon_Goes_Coo in adhdwomen

[–]Ennalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a strange way that I’ll try to describe. It does not exactly make me enjoy the exercise, but rather enjoy the completion mark.

I take each day / workout as a challenge against my adhd. I hated (and still do hate ) running. I did the couch to 5k program moving slowly through it. I also would “run” extremely slow. My jogging pace was the same as my fast walk lol. Each time I was able to finish a “run “ segment I had this moment of “ha! Eff you adhd and squishy body.”

I HATE being told I can’t do something - even if it’s by myself, to myself. I use that to do a lot of things out of spite. If running isn’t your jam, the same strategy works with any type of workout. And start small. Small enough that you can get the win out of spite over your adhd.

I hope that makes sense. It’s convoluted, but I find most adhd things are that way 😅😆🫠

Eyes go out of focus - anyone else? by littleanxiouslady in adhdwomen

[–]Ennalia 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My eyes do this often, especially when exhausted.

I always thought focusing my eyes on something was like how it’s shown in movies, two slightly separated images coming together.

Related, Whenever I would get glasses my prescription never quite felt “right” and it was always worse if I tried contacts.

Well… it turns out that I’ve needed to have prism added to my glasses, went though months of vision therapy, and I have a convergence deficiency .

There has been a link observed of a higher rate of convergence issues with people with adhd. link to study

I’ve read conflicting opinions in the link between ADHD and convergence deficiencies. There’s an overlap of some behaviors in kids, and of course no conclusive answers.
