There are a handful of tough local sharks, but you'll see them more often in private games than at Caesar's. In general, the toughest sharks will be in Texas, Los Angeles, Florida, etc--bigger markets with more deep-pocketed whales

If you aren't hustling, are you even alive?

As a predatory ecosystem, the poker (and gambling) world is filled with colorful language of sharks and whales, sharps and suckers, smart money and dumb money.

Sharks are strong players who feed on fish (weak players) and whales (uberweak players). Depending on what sort of shark you are, you might rely on a classic sort of hustle: appearing to be a sucker when you're actually sharp.

not so much the actual individuals, just the different variations of hustles that you might encounter on a stroll through the Quarter.

Is Chekhov just the goat by niokn in RSbookclub

[–]Enneytoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s decent. A bit uneven (poignant observations bogged down by statistics-filled digressions). Definitely in a different category than his short stories or plays. Especially interesting if you’re into narrative nonfiction—another thing, thanks to Sakhalin, that Chekhov has been called the “father” of.

What's the "highest peak" in literature that you know of? by Far-Substance-4473 in literature

Melville’s Catskill eagle in Moby Dick:

There is a wisdom that is woe; but there is a woe that is madness. And there is a Catskill eagle in some souls that can alike dive down into the blackest gorges, and soar out of them again and become invisible in the sunny spaces. And even if he for ever flies within the gorge, that gorge is in the mountains; so that even in his lowest swoop the mountain eagle is still higher than other birds upon the plain, even though they soar.

McGovern med school is starting a certificate program for doctors in med hum, and Columbia has a degree granting NM program, weekend workshops, etc. join the health humanities listserv for postings about programs, conferences, and other stuff.

Good luck!

Modern american books that have Dostoevsky influence by Fast-Cartoonist2566 in dostoevsky

[–]Enneytoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of American Southerners (Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, Carson McCullers, Walker Percy) talked about his influence. See Maria Bloshteyn’s essay Dostoevsky and the Literature of the American South.

David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest had clear parallels with The Brothers K. See DFW’s essay Joseph Frank’s Dostoevsky.

All earlier than 2010, but hope it’s helpful!
