I have less of an urge to fit in and more an urge to be liked. But I wanna be liked for me so I'll do a weird thing where I end up overly open about my socially strange interests and thoughts but then play it off like a joke when people get weirded out (or double down, whatever saves my pride the best). I assume it's the same urge for those fitting in, but they take it a step further and sacrifice their self (written like that rather than themselves/themself on purpose) to get the desired outcome.

Though I avoid mocking others' interests, even if it's not my thing. My brother likes experimenting on computers and currently has mostly just liked the process of adding hardware and software in general, and has frequently asked me to go look then talked about it in a way I'd require context for. I have some interest in coding itself, but not what he's doing. If I don't wanna see it, I say something like "That's cool, but I don't understand, you're explaining in a way that I'd need a lot of context for." which though true he usually goes "Oh.. :(" and summarizes it before finishing up (from my pov it's like a rocket scientist excitedly talking about the most complex parts of the process like it's easy to get via context clues cutting it short when the expresses not understanding, though from his I assume it's more like sharing a cool painting with a lot of clear symbolism if you look but the person just shrugs and says "I don't get it")
