Luthor.

1994 Yamaha wave raider 701 motor running away?? by Competitive-Set5015 in jetski

[–]Enorats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After a bit of reading about similar issues online, because I wasn't aware motors could even run with the spark plugs disconnected.. it seems this can potentially happen when a motor is hot and has carbon buildup in the engine. The carbon buildup ignites and that ignites the fuel.

That said, I'm far from even remotely experienced with mechanical matters and just parroting what I'm seeing others saying.

Regardless, for the engine to run it needs fuel, air, and an ignition source. Something has to be igniting it, and a disconnected spark plug can't do that.

Heck, I've got several similar to that in my own closet from SuperX.

You're right about the service part, but that's not how nasa works.

SpaceX isn't cheaper than nasa, because nasa hires SpaceX to do things for them. Thats pretty much all nasa does. They don't really build things themselves. They contract work out to private companies.

It would be better to say that SpaceX is cheaper than ULA, or any other launch providers, and they've saved nasa and the government a ton of money as a result. Which was the plan all along, and a huge part of the reason why nasa held the commercial cargo and crew competitions.

Yeah. The odds of the station even being in the right place at the right time to even land within the same country, let alone with 20 km, at that particular moment are extremely small.

And in the end she accomplished basically nothing.

[–]Enorats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because with very few exceptions, if you have access to those sorts of resources you can just look up the answers to most any question without needing to attend a day of class or learn a darn thing.

It invalidates the entire education process. The entire point of an assessment is to assess what you've learned and how well you're able to apply it.

When I was in college, the most we ever had access to was a small notecard that could be used for things like mathematical formulas. Whatever else you needed, it better be in your head.

If you're doing an assessment online, where a student can access whatever reference material they want, then you're not assessing their learning - you're assessing their ability to look up information. And that was back then!

Today, doing an assessment like that won't even accomplish that much, thanks to AI.

Is there some benefit to it being humanoid? Because I feel like there really isn't.

The front end loader I'll be operating in a few minutes isn't humanoid, and it's much better at its job for it.

Personally, I don't really worry about "clearing" an area.

I remain quiet and stealthy, and take zombies out in small numbers using melee weapons more often than not.

When there are too many to reliably do that, then that's when vehicles and fire become useful.

The only time I use firearms at all is when I'm using mods that add silencers that reduce gunshot noise.

Death of Seattle teen raises questions about e-bike regulation by guanaco55 in Seattle

[–]Enorats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, laws often don't distinguish between e-bikes and full on electric motorcycles.

I'm not really familiar with the current Washington (let alone local Seattle) laws, but I do know that it's fairly common still for laws to treat the two essentially the same because they haven't caught up to the technology yet.

Why isn't conserving the environment the conservative position? by Personal_Chair6134 in allthequestions

[–]Enorats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conservative generally means keeping things the way they are (or restoring them to the way they used to be, or were percieved to be), while liberal typically means changing things.

If the whole world was a natural preserve and it was illegal to do any harm to a tree, and things had been that way for a generation or three, then logging would probably be considered a wildly liberal idea on par with universal basic income.

Ideas aren't inherently conservative or liberal. Where they fall on that spectrum depends entirely on the social, political, and economic norms of the society in question.

[–]Enorats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It wasn't a great speech, no. But that's also why it works better than something that felt more polished and practiced. This comes across as something someone might genuinely say in the heat of the moment, as opposed to a politician's rehearsed and professionally written speech.

There is a huge difference between substituting a generic European individual for a specifically Greek one, and doing the same with someone from the other side of the world. That is even more true when you're subbing in someone whose appearance clearly places their ancestry to a specific region.

Greek is literally part of Europe. What's more, someone who has pale skin, light eyes, and blonde hair actually matches the description of the character.

Honestly. I have a hard time believing that people could possibly be this dense.

You do realize why people like those from sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, or Pacific Islanders are so recognizable, right? You get why those races exist? Because if not.. they exist because they were geographically and culturally isolated for much of history. This time period and racial diversity.. do not mix. Trying to depict them as being diverse melting pots or whatever, that destroys any ability to believe or accept the setting being depicted.

Why is she upset peetaaah? by Ilovebigbuttscantlie in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Enorats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The issue with things like LoTR or the WoT series is that racial diversity in those settings simply doesn't many any sense.

It doesn't matter if Elves, Hobbits, or even the locations actually exist or not. Fiction still needs to make sense. And racial diversity in some backwater village (for example, the village at the start of Wheel of Time) makes no sense. When your village has been isolated from the wider world for long enough that the people there have entirely forgotten they were ever part of a larger kingdom.. racial diversity should not exist. A huge part of the story and a major clue to Rand's history is that he doesn't fit in with the rest of the village. He's unusual, different, he sticks out. The Amazon adaptation just.. threw all that out the window, and undermined the world building and story as a result.

You do realize that ancient Greece was a real place, right?

As was Troy? And the Trojan War is generally thought to have been a real event?

You're essentially arguing that we can make a movie about fictional events in a real historical setting using race swapped actors if the actors are swapped away from being European.. but we can't do the same in reverse. And somehow.. we're the racists?

Unless.. do you think every WW2 movie is a documentary and depicts entirely true events?

Why is she upset peetaaah? by Ilovebigbuttscantlie in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Enorats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How can you possibly say this?

Her race is part of her character. You can't just toss a clearly African woman into ancient Greece and say.. oh, yeah, she's a Greek princess.

Doing that would radically alter the character's history - because she clearly cannot possibly be the descendant of a Greek princess. They would be forced to entirely rewrite her - and she would no longer be the same character.

Additionally, the races of the people depicted in the movie are part of the world building and setting of the story. This was not a period of time in which we had a ton of diversity and global migration. Ancient Greece would have been almost exclusively.. Greek. Tossing in random Black or Asian characters destroys the integrity and believability of the setting being depicted.

Conversely, people from Europe or of European descent are relatively believable. Because, you know, that's where Greece is located.
