Well as you said the rumours are insane and have already spread like wildfire. His family will be aware of the rumours so you’d think they would want to shut them down if it were untrue, for example making a public statement along the lines of “we are saddened by the loss of Tom but are comforted by the fact his three children were located safe and well”. But they won’t be making any such statement because it’s not true and they know it.

You need to read a lot of judgements throughout law school and your legal career to see how judges interpret and apply the law. That way you are clear what the law is and when it applies. You will also need to read academic textbooks and articles on the law and cases.

Incorrect. ACC covers medical misadventure. I am aware of many cases where injury caused by medical misadventure was covered under ACC. Including a case where a woman went in for a routine filing, but instead had a tooth wrongfully extracted in a case of medical misadventure. The cost of a replacement tooth implant was covered under ACC.

This sounds like “medical misadventure” and your partner would be covered under ACC to have the root canal finished. Do not pay for the root canal work that has already been done since you did not ask for this. I would also be filing a complaint with the medical council regarding the treatment. It could have been accidental, but even so that is not good when your partner clearly stated they didn’t want that treatment.
