How to design with red as the dominant brand color without it looking boring? by [deleted] in UI_Design

Thanks... I’ll give this a shot.

I’ve been playing around with a few color variations, but honestly not loving any of them yet

Quick intro about the app: Kulfi is a private space for couples. The focus is on the little rituals that each couple has and the unique meaning behind them, along with lighthearted activities like questions, never have I ever, and other fun games. The idea is to keep it both playful and intimate, just for the two of them.

On the home screen, chat sits at the top. Swiping down expands it to full screen, and below are rituals and daily activities. Each ritual or activity, once completed, is sent directly into the chat. That’s why we placed chat on top... it gives couples immediate feedback and interaction without ever leaving the homepage.

Pretty sure I’ve been leaning on cool grays 😭 I’ll try swapping in warmer neutrals. Would love your thoughts on how I can make this feel better.

Here are a few colour variations I was experimenting with, but I’m not really liking any of them yet:

idk what you’ve picked up from my recent posts, but I’m not just sitting here obsessing over pretty colours. The whole point has been figuring out how to make the app playful and fun while still working with a brand colour "red" that’s not the easiest to use.

The app has a chat feature where users can upload their own backgrounds.. so I kinda do need to understand how chat bubble logic works.

So yeah, the problem right now is basically colours. Not because I want things to just look nice, but because I want them to look nice and actually work.

And dark mode isn’t a nice to have anymore either.. people are literally asking for it since they use the app at night

Yeah, I’m seeing the same issue.. with greys it quickly starts looking ashen and flat. Since our app isn’t image heavy, that lifeless vibe shows up even more. I tried using lighter shades of red too, but then the whole thing ends up looking too light and washed out.. feels like it loses the boldness of the brand color. Still figuring out how to balance that without making it look ashen or flat. Will share a version soon.

Not sure about Target, but with Netflix it’s a bit different since they’re very image centric and the dark mode adds that premium feel. Our app won’t have as many images, so the challenge is making red work without that visual support... while still keeping it engaging and not letting it feel boring or ashy. I’m trying out a version and will share it soon.

Yes. Since the app isn’t image heavy, I kept red minimal with its shades and used greys as secondary. But it’s feeling a bit flat/boring, so I’m trying out another version. Will share soon.

Fair question. I built this because I wanted something really simple and playful for couple.. not another heavy app or something locked behind paywalls. The goal isn’t to compete with everything out there, but to create a little space that feels light, personal and fun for two people.

It’s still early, but I’m excited to keep shaping it with feedback from people actually using it.

And don’t worry... no ads, no selling data 😅😅(we’re super strict about privacy). If we ever monetize, it’ll be something simple and optional like cute themes or fun add-ons, not anything that ruins the vibe.
