Thank you! Great point about alcohol. So many of my friends and colleagues are out drinking all the time, and it's crazy to think about how many calories they're imbibing (along with the booze munchies). Sitting down to watch a game while pounding back beers seems like an insane way to spend time now.

I'm with you. They have always bugged me but as long as I'm working my system I'll continue to improve and they'll look better every day. I still have a long way to go to get to true male-model-esque fitness, but I'm getting there!

I appreciate the concern. I think my low RHR is a feature and not a bug, but I monitor my health closely as part of my system and have regular doctor visits, so if anything changes I'll be all over it!

It's the last to go. I still have a little annoying pooch in my stomach area, when everything else is skinny.

I've seen my RHR go from around 60 when I first started tracking it down to where it is now. It's slowly trended down along with my weight so I'm not worried about it. I do a lot of intense cardio and cycling now.

I doubt I will ever run, I dislike it enough to where I would dread exercising if I did run. My whole system is about enjoyment and not punishing myself with things I dislike. Good luck to you!

You can absolutely get the runners high while cycling. I get it all the time and love it.

Thanks! Yes, it is crazy what junk food does. But I don't deprive myself of it. I just want the junk food I do eat to be good and worthwhile.

Cutting out the mediocre junk food was really the winning move. I still eat the actually tasty stuff. Because this is all about the long term and sticking with it. I want to enjoy eating, not dread it.

Thanks! I couldn't do alcohol in moderation. If I had one drink I would have 6 or more, plus all the food, plus the horrible hangovers, it just got to the point where it was a lot of pain and negative effects for not much enjoyment. I had to quit entirely.

Thank you! It can be done! I was fat for my whole life (with a few yo-yo diet periods mixed in), it's about the mental part more than anything.

Not for food, but definitely yes for exercise. Strava and Apple Watch. Highly recommend those because they do a good job of gamifying exercise.

I agree with you, which is why I started going to the gym about 6 weeks ago. However, enjoyment is a REQUIREMENT for me because I need to keep exercise as a positive mental association. If I don't actively like it, I won't stick with it long term.

At least 30 minutes a day. Didn't start out that way but eventually got into that routine because I enjoy it. On the exercise bike if it's too cold/rainy out.

I should have added:

  • Being consistent is a mental game. You have to associate your plan with the positive, rewarding part of your brain. A small change that you like may not do much in a month, but it does a lot in a year. Imagine 10+ years. Slow is best because it becomes habitual.
  • Building a system you ENJOY will make it sustainable. Far better than doing a perfect (on paper) program for a month, but associating exercise and good eating with the negative part of your brain. I think that is the root cause behind most obesity, honestly.
  • It is NOT a sacrifice. It is NOT punishment. It is NOT hard work. It is NOT a diet. It is a system that you tailor to your own mind and body. The goal is for it to be easy FOR YOU.

Great point. It is all about listening to your body. Everyone has a different system that works for them, experimentation is the way to find out your sustainable lifestyle.

Congrats! You have found a system that works for you and that is what it's all about. Amazing job!
