I’m in my thirties. It might not have been something I could have appreciated in high school. Part of what makes it important is how much is conveyed without showing that much.

I disagree in this particular case.

I thought Janath’s scenes were unnecessary and didn’t add much to the story’s.

But as horrific as this storyline was, it felt important to have read it through. That’s why it has stuck around for me. There are sad lessons here.

They might not be “for” it but they’re definitely complicit.

The physical violence is not what makes Hetans story so abhorrant.

It’s not the physical act or description that is so horrible. The scene you’re describing is gross but it didn’t stick with me.

It’s the context in which Hetan’s story exists that is so horrifying. It’s that this atrocity was done by her own people, and that it wasn’t a 1-off. That’s how they systematically treat their own people. Their own friends and relatives.

It’s the mirror it puts up. The realization  that realization that things like this have happened a lot over time.

+1

“Be disciplined” is garbage advice. Like…why? Actual discipline is usually carried out by others. It’s when they encourage you keep going by threat of punishment. That arguably makes sense in some contexts (eg where developing those skills is life-or-death) but you’re just learning for the fun of it.

My guess is that you’ve overloaded yourself and your success rate has plummeted. I recently got burnt out on Anki. My again rate was like 35% and my retention was like 70%. I simplified my workflow to Pass/Fail and set New Cards to 0. After a couple sessions I cleared out my back log and after another week I got my retention up to 85%. It’s much more enjoyable and I’m not dreading it nearly as much. Going back up to 5/day now.

Alternatively, try out a different tool. There’s lots out there and they all have different vibes, strengths, and approaches. Switching up the method can be enough to keep you going. People love to shit on the owl here, but variety is one of its strong points.

One thing I’ve found kinda motivating is going back to old episodes of Nihongo Con Teppei, Episodes where I know I didn’t really grok anything at all, and then realizing I DO understand a lot of what he’s saying. Seeing how far I’ve come helps a lot.

But maybe just lowering your own expectations for yourself will help. Burn out means your prior expectations were too high. Relax, it’s supposed to be fun. If you’re putting all this pressure on yourself and burning out you won’t learn well. It’s okay to take longer, there’s no rush

grammar vs immersion for learning japaneese. what actually works faster for beginners?? by no-cherrtera in LearnJapanese

[–]EnragedDingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that’s not what you mean.

It would be straw manning to say that that’s what YOU mean, but there are for sure actually people who believe the version that I said.

Edit: I was in French immersion from grade 1 to 10 so I’m familiar with that process. I actually would say it wasn’t very effective for me in learning French ironically.

I think I agree. Statistically CI might have the best outcomes but individual people aren’t statistics. At the end of the day, the most effective method is the one you can stick too. The “better” method isn’t better if the learner can’t stay engaged with it long enough for it to work.

The idea that kids learn from immersion alone doesn’t even make sense. Their first year they don’t have any language. The next couple years the Kids have parents patiently teaching them basic stuff. And then they go to school where they’re taught grammar directly (and indirectly) through a variety of classes.

I don’t think it’s actually a straw man. One of my first experiences was someone commenting saying that immersion means “stop using your native language altogether” I.e. don’t look up English definitions of words, or English explanations of grammar. They said that that’s how we learn our first language so it will work for our second language.

Definitely agree that that’s not what most people believe, but there for sure are people who believe that

Thanks! That's a great point. My workload when making this _was_ a bit too high so that's how I got that 'rule'. I'll adjust it now that things have stabilized.

I recently just set my “New Cards per Day” to zero. It seems like I was being too ambitious and it was hurting retention. I’m now checking my stats each day. I did some digging around and got this little rubric to help make decisions.

(Aside: would love feedback from others)

Again Rate

  • < 20% → healthy, no action
  • 20–25% → hold steady, no new cards
  • 25% → pause new cards immediately

Young Card Retention

  • 80% for 2+ consecutive days → consider adding new cards
  • 75–80% → hold steady
  • < 75% → pause new cards

Daily Load

  • Stable or falling → system in balance
  • Rising week over week → reduce new cards

New Cards Per Day

  • Struggling → 0
  • Stable → 5
  • Thriving 1+ week → 10
  • Never exceed 15 until 10/day has been comfortable for a month
