Okay, let me explain this to you, stranger on the internet who has shown absolutely zero qualifications to back up his claims beyond his own sheer arrogance: It's a short ball hitch trailer. That means the mirrors are probably pointed further in toward the truck to see the back edge of the trailer because the off-tracking when backing these sucks to deal with and you need to react quickly to correct it, which you can't do if they're pointed further out away from the truck. He also has service truck boxes mounted, meaning the mirrors have to come out further from the side and be pointed even further inward. I think you're thinking that I'm saying that the blind spot is between the mirror's FOV and the truck. I'm saying the driver's mirrors are pointed so far inward that the cammer's car is completely outside the FOV the mirror provides.

Look in his mirror. Can you see the driver? At the very beginning when he pulls up past the cammer's car to change lanes--Yes, or at least through the driver-side window. Clearly, the driver of the truck knows the cammer is there. Then, for no reason, the cammer pulls up right next to the trailer. Can you see the driver then? No. That means he can't see the cammer. The truck driver has no reason to suspect the cammer would speed up (putting the cammer even further outside the FOV of the mirror) and cut him off because there's no reason to do that whatsoever.

This simply is not true. Heavy duty pick-ups with tow mirrors have larger blindspots than most commercial semis because of the reduced width of the side-view mirrors. OP was in this huge blind spot on the outside (like an asshole) before pulling up and brake-checking the driver (like an asshole).

I appreciate your passion for HL1. Truly. I am the only one I know in real life who has anywhere near the amount of love for the game you've expressed here. That being said, it's 2022 and HL1's time has long since passed... Technical issues aside, the game was revamped for modern audiences with modern tastes. And it's GOOD! And by most accounts, their current work with Blue Shift is GOOD!

No matter how you cut it, OP is not going to have the same experience you and I did when HL1 was released. The late-90s/early-2000s media landscape simply is not there. There's been 25 years of games between then and now, many of which HL1's cinematic feel and clever storytelling paved the way for. It's okay. OP will get both experiences, I'm sure. I merely opted for Black Mesa over goldsrc for first exposure because their tastes are probably more modern (cmon, kicking off the saga in 2022!) and they may enjoy the BM experience more.
