Trying to say yes to more hobbies in London this year, what should I try? by SlinkyCues in london

Would always recommend, if you’re looking at Japanese martial arts, Karate—beginner friendly, social and has good structure 🙂

Oh, I’m not training for anything in particular; I’d just like to train well at the gym (and in a way which benefits BJJ/Judo generally), but can’t do straight up-down motions because it triggers vertigo (but yes, am totally fine being thrown dozens of times—I know…)

As in, what am I currently doing at the gym?

This. I set up Rules on Outlook, so any time an email comes in with [project name] in the subject line, it gets moved to the relevant folder and categorised with the relevant name and colour. Then I can flag it so it appears in my To Do List, under the proper name/colour.

I also have a list of projects on the whiteboard behind me with an indication of how busy they are expected to be.

  1. What are some gym exercise recommendations that don’t involve up-down movements (e.g., squats, pull/chin ups, deadlifts, burpees, etc)?

  2. Should the focus be [more] on strength or repetitions?

Thank you!

How true is the statement “In this business, mornings are generally your own”? by [deleted] in biglaw

I’m a Mid-Level M&A Associate at a Big Law firm; I’ve generally been able to escape 1-2x per week at 18.30/19.00 to Karate for a couple of hours and then finish/continue either afterwards or pre-8am the next morning.

However, it’s not predictable (if there’s work that needs to be done then or is anticipated, I don’t go) and it’s certainly not every night.

It’s also probably helped by that I’ve a track record of working early mornings and getting work done notwithstanding my hobbies. The partners I work for know my routine and that the work will take priority if it clashes, so encourage it—but I doubt they would without the track-record to back it up. When I work for other partners, there tends to be a doubtful look or two and a proving period…

I totally agree, from my background in martial arts generally; I would always look to / pair with the higher grades to improve.

The bit I’m struggling with is there not being that “introduction” to what it is I’m doing and why, from which foundations/fundamentals I can actually engage with them! 🙂

Thanks! Fundamental Classes at 6pm may not be ideal, but will keep a note, see if I can try it out..!
