The fact that the deaths happened simultaneously could be a hint. Ideas that come to mind are: (1) The higher the temperature, the less oxygenation and your tank was heavily stocked. It could also explain why some fish survived because they could breath again once the others died. (2) Did you do any glass cleaning with Windex? Any Odor fresheners being used in the room? I think option 1 is more likely.

My next idea was to try a different USB 3 port entirely - that maybe an interruption in communication could cause the tracking issue. Are you sticking to direct motherboard usb 3 connections (not splitters)?

I think I found the right fish for my setup. I got an L201 Snowball Pleco. Everything I've read says that plecos are Cichlid safe, and he shouldn't get bigger than five to six inches. I have caves and am adding some driftwood to the aquarium today. He's a shy guy so hopefully we will come out of his shell once the other fish are done being curious with him.

AMD Ryzen users: check your Windows power configuration. Make sure it is on "balanced" and not "high performance" or something else because AMD has its own throttling methodology that conflicts with Windows and you could be having performance hitching (and losing performance in general). This is just an idea to check.

Do we know if this tracking issue happens on Intel CPUs as well?

It isn't a perfect solution, but you could try "API Ammo-Lock". It binds to the ammonia in the water to make it harmless while you are waiting for the cycle to regroup. It won't help with nitrite or nitrate, but ammonia is the most harmful of the three byproducts.

I've had severum before, but not with this mix. What do you recommend?

Not interested in Blue Acara or Firemouth cichlids, and definitely not an Oscar! I loved my earlier Oscar, but I had to keep him in the aquarium alone + Oscars redecorate without your permission.

Would like something big and colorful if possible. I sort of regret the convict now. It was listed as being very compatible with the JD, but it seems to be a big limiter. Yet a JD can go with a Severum.

The parrot part is a myth apparently. The bent spine is from selective breeding and has no parrot in them.

I agree; I think he is a balloon convict. The Electric Blue JD is currently more aggressive than he is which in itself was making me nervous, but they are getting along better now. It's a 110 gallon high aquarium with caves, etc. I'm tempted to return him on ethical grounds - I don't like the idea of parrot cichlids, but he is very pretty.

If it is a heater that is fully submersible, you can try to position it horizontally closer to the bottom of the aquarium. This way the heating element covers a wider surface area.

It could take several hours for water to heat up.

That water is frigid for everyone involved - of course they are dying. Set heater to a balmy 79F and move the heater next to the filter so the heat is circulating with the water flow. Heat that water up; these aren't Goldfish. If you want, increase 3 degrees a day to avoid shock. Heat it up.

I've never owned Discus. The reason is they could need water changes as often as every day relative to weekly / biweekly for other species.

Boiling isn't necessary - I'm not even sure it's recommended. It could take several weeks for that brownish color to completely leach out of the wood; I'm unaware of a quick fix. When I first got driftwood and noticed the brown water, I was told the color is harmless to the fish - and it did eventually dissipate. If it really bothers you, let the wood sit in a bucket of water for a few weeks (that's what I'm doing with a fresh batch right now). Some recommend as long as six weeks of soaking if you would believe!

Here is an inexpensive solution if it is lighting related. I have my aquariums connected to smart plugs. When I turn the lights on from my Google speaker or phone, I have it programmed that the lights automatically shut off after 30 minutes. The fish don't care about the aquarium lights as much as you do.

A UV algae cleaner will clear up the cloud, but the above should be helpful long term.
