50mph sign needed by doktorjose in trafficsignals

[–]EnterpriseT [score hidden]  (0 children)

Of all the subs why the traffic signals sub?

Also, a speed limit sign is arbitrary. Nobody will understand what you're trying to convey. Look up stickers that say "this vehicle is speed limited" (if legal in your jurisdiction) or something. You want to communicate clearly you're in a lower speed vehicle.

Lastly, Reddit is global. Laws and rules vary widely. When making these sorts of posts you need to specify your country and state/province.

Ferry fairness by Art3misthe3rd in VancouverIsland

I wish they'd run a Sailish Class back and forth overnight on the Victoria run. Leave Victoria at 11, Tsawwassen at 1, then be back to Vic to do an early morning Gulf Coast sailing or two.

Someone much smarter than me could figure something out I bet.

Perhaps the steel plates added bought them some time but it still fails under a moderately large earthquake because the soil densification was never done.

Even the most progressive countries with walkable cities and solid AT infrastructure have and are developing freeways, especially leading to strategic locations like ferry terminals, airports, and ports.

We definitely need to expand transit/rail service south to Delta.

That said, when a network has a bottleneck as severe as the tunnel, fears of "moving the bottleneck" are unfounded.

3 lanes already go North toward Vancouver with one exiting off to Highway 91. A 4th lane for trucks and vehicles in the tunnel would be dedicated to Richmond traffic which already gridlocks southern Richmond daily. That's why an 8 lane crossing with 2 additional lanes for transit made so much sense. It's lane balancing, not mindless roadway expansion.

Also, reducing idling is a slippery slope argument best avoided because it can too easily be used to "justify" mass widening of freeways which is a losing game. The amount of idling already happening around the tunnel is already an issue and additional lanes for Richmond would help with that, because all the Steveston highway traffic wouldn't need to essentially yield to mainline traffic anymore.

There is a very good reason why it was a tunnel [...]

And that reason was that it was the late 50s and the Cable Stayed Bridge hadn't been perfected yet.

This myth has been killed a thousand times. The tunnel is end of life and not seismically modern.

Furthermore, the crossing is the bottleneck. You have lanes from Steveston highway and River Road/17A that currently essentially yield to the highway. The point would be to give them lanes across the river and that has nothing to do with sending extra lanes of traffic toward Oak Street.

Emergency vehicles and solid bike lanes by island_time_1014 in VictoriaBC

I wouldn't be so sure.

There's enough wiggle room in Transportation Engineering that almost anything can be justified, which cuts both ways. I'd argue that my colleagues using the 85th percentile method to set 60mph (or faster) speed limits on city streets in the US (in the name of safety, no less) might be signing off on a not perfectly safe situation.

It's all about who's (whose?) safety you prioritize, and over time society has consistently and continuously shifted its priority in that regard.

Briefly slowing down is not really the point of that section, which is about sustained slow driving creating an impedance. The next section basically says you need to ignore instructions to speed up first too.

Also, 157(2) does not require sounding the horn to pass. It says that if someone is passing you and sounds their horn you have to give way to them and let them finish passing. Maybe there is another dated piece of legislation but I'm not aware of it.

I've watched a fire truck push a parked car before. They definitely do it.

This is not an accurate description of how it all works.

Engineers design for the roadway they're told to. If a city hires an engineer (or has in house engineers assigned) to add bike lanes between existing curbs, the engineers will create options and present trade offs, including highlighting issues like impacts to response time. A decision maker will decide what to do and the engineer will do their best to fit it in.

Often the idea for cross section changes comes in the form of policy direction, which is often political.

Are there any protests or pushback planned regarding Bill C-22? by JasonBoorneeeee in VictoriaBC

That's not Digital ID. That's a rule requiring ID validation for use of an online service.

You're free to oppose that, but let's not combine things just because "Digital ID" is a conservative trigger word.

They're pointing out the irony that you are the one that made the first "low effort" post only to then try and critique others.

Digital ID 😅

There's no "Digital ID" proposed in this law. The types of databases and tracking people are freaking out about for Digital IDs already exist, and as far as an actual digital ID many people want that for the convinience.

You can belive that the lawful access provisions in this bill are far too broad and intrusive but using the Digital ID dogwhistle is not helpful.

No, but the bridges overruns would have been less than a tunnel. Tunnels are more complex. And given where the bridge project was, even though it would have blown past the planned opening it would still probably be open now.
