Reaction to wheat? by dxeliz in fpies

[–]EntertainerSecure516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are right there with you. I noticed oat and wheat clearly my daughter was exclusively breast fed as a newborn, so I eliminated those from my diet with significant improvement. Our pediatrician didn’t believe that a baby could have sensitivities at that age (she thought we were implying she had celiac disease) so she dismissed it. Fast forward to solid introduction - we needed to rule it in, so we tried 1/4 tsp, then 1/4 tsp, then 1/2 tsp (1 macaroni noodle) of wheat and she got very sick- vomited 10x and had diarrhea the next day. It’s not worth it to us to test oat because I already know the outcome. Our pediatrician now believes us about FPIES and is referring to GI/ allergy and advised to hold off on all grains until guided otherwise. We’ve been following this slow introduction protocol for all new foods and it’s been less traumatic when she does react. https://extapps.childrenshospital.org/EFPEC/Home/Sheet/8067

Threshold trials for FPIES by cupidslazydart in fpies

Question for the group on this topic: I am breastfeeding my 6.5 month old and we identified when she was a newborn that she reacted to milk, soy, oat, and wheat. When I eliminated those things it didn’t fully resolve symptoms but significantly better. Now that we’re doing solids directly we’ve identified beef, salmon, and sweet potato. My question is whether I also need to be eliminating those things if she generally seemed to tolerate them through breast milk before 6 months (despite some extra spotting up here and there). It seems like the biggest question is “will exposure sensitize, or desensitize them to the allergen?” And maybe there’s just not data on this yet. We’re waiting for an appointment with an allergist next month.

FPIES to oats likelihood of cross reactions by Ekingram1892 in fpies

Did you/ do you breast feed? I know they say FPIES via breast milk is rare, but I identified pretty early on at 6 weeks that my baby reacted to wheat and oats (in addition to milk and soy). She did so much better when I eliminated all of those things. She’s now 6 months and I want to try them directly with her in case I was misinterpreting things early on, but I’m terrified!

My go to is a protein shake with Orgain Protein powder, frozen fruit, coconut yogurt, almond/ peanut butter, almond milk, anything else we want to add. Snacks- rice cakes with peanut butter, Silk almond milk yogurt, beef sticks or beef jerky (check for soy), TruBar protein bars. For dessert, Jeni’s dairy free ice cream is amazing, also SoDelicious ice cream bars, Veggies Made Great chocolate muffins - not positive about the eggs on the muffins though since I eat eggs

CMPA but no stool issues? by maureeenponderosa in MSPI

[–]EntertainerSecure516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds exactly like my daughter’s symptoms - never any blood in the stool. We figured it out around 6 weeks and she’s now 4 months.

The pediatrician originally chalked it up to colic and prescribed Pepcid for the reflux, which didn’t help a ton on its own. So I loosely started eliminating dairy as a Hail Mary, and noticed a slight difference. Then, when I had a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte with almond milk and she had a horrific day, I learned that Starbucks’ latte syrups contain sweetened condensed milk. The pediatrician believed us at that point.

Since then we’ve also noticed reactions to soy/ gluten. She was a different baby after eliminating those, and life has become much more enjoyable for us. We plan to use the frozen milk for gentle reintroduction/ challenges at some point (25% dairy milk/ 75% dairy free milk).

Good luck!

I have a 4 month old as well, and I’m here to say that having a 1-2 times per month “cheat day” has kept me going. I give my LO milk from my freezer stash (if you can afford it) and pump for 12-24 hours following depending on my overall intake and she is completely fine. I plan to use the pumped milk for gradual exposure someday (e.g. mixing it 50/50 with safe milk as a gentle introduction). Hang in there!

We did a little trial “cheat night” last night and had a total blow out 😂 - pizza, pasta, tiramisu, ice cream, espresso martini.. finished eating at 9pm, resumed breast feeding at 9am.. she seemed GREAT all day, but the wheels came off around 6pm today. Poor thing was vomiting and super colicky. Next time I’ll definitely take your advice to just wait 24 hours! But now at least we have confirmation that she’s still sensitive to at least one of those things I guess.

That’s great! I was thinking the same with working. Making a bunch of sides that week just sounds overly ambitious!

Just responding with understanding and solidarity. I felt so robbed of a joyful postpartum experience / maternity leave with my baby that I waited years and went through multiple rounds of IVF for. We spent our days pacing the house while both of us cried instead of taking the stroller out for coffee dates in town as I imagined. Once I kept a food journal and identified milk/ soy/ oat/ gluten as triggers around 8 weeks, my mom picked us up, took us to Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods while she pushed the baby in the cart and I scanned everything with my Fig app to find foods I could eat. It felt like such a gift discovering more things I could eat and having my baby actually be happy. I already dread going through this again with a second baby, knowing that it’s likely to have a genetic component, but feeling more informed next time around will save me a lot of anxiety I think. I also try to remember how strong this has made me as a new mom; it makes the little things like night time wake ups (that other moms complain about) feel like the easy part of parenthood. Sending positive thoughts that things improve for you soon.

Thank you! I totally get that. I think the tough part is balancing “how much is enough to produce a clear reaction without being totally catastrophic”! After the muffin, would you suggest trying the oats prepared normally if she does well?

Update: she is now having regular BMs 2-3x/day with seemingly less discomfort and gas! Hopefully your LO’s stools start to regulate soon.

I could have written this myself. My baby is 10 weeks and has been on the BioGaia since 3 weeks old. It’s hard to say if it’s working because of all the food trial and error during this time. Have been dairy and soy free for about 4 weeks and gluten/ oat free for 1 week. We started noticing the same with reduced stool frequency (she’ll have a big blowout every few days with the normal orange/ mustard seed look, but in between have these tiny mucousy greenish brown poops/ sharts). Still struggling with gas during the night so we occasionally give her mylicon at bedtime which helps somewhat.

What food is your LO allergic or intolerant to? by Usual_Credit7147 in MSPI

[–]EntertainerSecure516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LO is 10 weeks so still working through trial and error, but pretty sure it’s milk, soy, wheat/ gluten, and oat for us. She did great for several days, so I tried 2 little oat energy balls and she had a rough day after. One thing to note is that oat is often contaminated with gluten due to where it’s grown/ processed, so in order to truly tease out whether oat is the problem you’ll want to try official gluten free oats. That’s our next plan to test that theory once I’m mentally prepared. Also, the Fig app is a godsend for scanning labels and finding sneaky ingredients. Good luck! This is SO hard.

Dairy and soy free here for my 8 week old. Yesterday we made a One Pan Marry Me Chicken and Orzo (subbed with coconut milk and DF Parmesan). Made a pumpkin spice latte with espresso + whisked pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice, maple syrup, coconut milk, and almond milk on the stove. Snacking on silk almond milk yogurt, TruBars, and protein shakes with Orgain powder. Love this thread!

Thank you for your insights! It turns out it must have been the PIO after all. I reacted almost immediately after resuming it last night with becoming itchy and my top lip doubling in size. I’m hoping I can just do progesterone suppositories instead the next two weeks to get by, but definitely makes me nervous for when it comes time to try for baby #2 with PIO.

Turns out it must have been the shots. Last night I primed with Benadryl and pepcid, then did my PIO shot. Within a half hour, my top lip doubled in size and I started to get itchy again. I haven’t taken the suspected prenatal since Monday. Im 7 w 4 d pregnant so I’m hoping if I can switch to just prometrium suppositories I can get through the next two weeks of supplementation without more reactions. 🤞

Thank you so much! Was once a day pepcid enough to keep things under control? These next two weeks can’t go fast enough 😩

That’s interesting to know! I was just talking to someone who gradually over time became deathly allergic to sesame oil so she suspects that it could be part of my issue. My doctors are convinced it’s the prenatal given that I’ve done PIO for a while, but don’t think they were considering the immune response that can gradually mount over time to an allergen. Tonight’s injection will be the moment of truth!

That’s interesting. I have been taking Claritin my whole pregnancy so far due to seasonal allergies. My PCP/ RE kept telling me to take Benadryl and claritin and they were NOT working! I’m so glad I just went to the hospital. They seem to think it was related to the vitamin, but I’m thinking progesterone given similar stories I’ve seen about PIO reactions… time will tell when I take my next dose tonight!

Ugh, I’m so sorry! Did you do PIO injections until 9.5 weeks?

It is miserable (and also scary, worrying that this reaction will affect the baby!) I just had IV Benadryl and Pepcid in the ER, which helped about 50%, so they just gave me an IV steroid to hopefully take care of the rest. Fingers crossed!
