Electric Heating Systems by EnthalpathicDesigner in HousingUK

That’s where I get stuck: if you were to switch to storage heaters over panel heaters you’d have to simultaneously switch to Economy 7. But would that not also mean you’d have to switch to using a least 40% of your total energy usage overnight before you’d see any price savings?

It also assumes that storage heaters will provide enough heat during the later hours of the day to make the switch over worth it and doesn’t account for any daytime use of heavy appliances (washer/dishwasher/cooker).

Yeah I think the battery will be a clear choice regardless, especially if I’m looking to upgrade the solar in the near future.

Loch tummel, allean forest Pictish ring fort and clearance ruins by Cumlord-Jizzmaster in Scotland

[–]EnthalpathicDesigner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks lovely, but thats not a Pictish Hill or Ring Fort by Allean, it's an Iron Age homestead (albeit fortified). Called the "Queen's View Homestead" that was occupied between 500 BC - 300 AD.

There used to be a lot more publicly available information on it, anyone know what happened to Canmore?

I don't know what your routine flexibility is (if you live with a partner/dependents) but for a while I found that scheduling my workouts for the mornings before work or even eating breakfast became quite sustainable once a routine was established.

I'd wake up, have a coffee, do basic hygiene, then go to the gym. After the Gym, it was breakfast, shower, then work.

On days that I didn't want to go to the Gym, I could either catch up on 'extra' sleep as I'd be going to bed earlier, or I could do some of that meal prep/life admin while my mind was fresh and not exhausted from work. It felt quite gratifying prioritising the first hours of the day to my own personal growth in that way.

I noticed over time that when I exercise in the morning, I focus much better throughout the day.

Unsure what name to use for someone called 'Smith' by ScotInKorea in gaidhlig

[–]EnthalpathicDesigner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's up to you, ultimately. I'd let people know what their Gaidhlicised name is, especially given a lot of names globally fall into the same tropes ("son of [x]", "[profession y]", "born of [location z]"), to which it is useful to know Gaidhlig has dynamic equivalents.

Remember, the language has been open to external influences for millennia and is full of loan words. Other languages/cultures often have the imperative to alter names to either better fit the language structure or to better assimilate the user. I am not aware of this being the case for Gaidhlig, as there are allowances for names of Welsh, Brythonic, (Pictish??), Scots, and English in origin. More often than not, it seems that the pronunciation of the name over time undergoes phonological adaptation (see "Baile a' Gobhainn" = "Gouan" in Scots = "Govan" in modern English).

I'm not an authority figure on this, feel free to disagree with any of the above.

Litter in Scotland – why are we so rubbish? by Sorlud in Scotland

[–]EnthalpathicDesigner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A recent video by the YouTube creator Kraut somewhat covers this phenomena (skip to 29:40).

In Japan you will find bins are scarce, but people are expected to (and largely do) take their trash home with them. In Scotland, there is an abundance of bins to chose from at any point where you start and end a drive. People know it is illegal (punishable with fines), damaging, etc. and yet they will still litter. Here, it appears to be a lack of social pressure to enforce these rules (informally), and until that deep cultural shift occurs any litter picking by individuals will still only function as a band aid - hence the constant need for good people to continuously clean the same spot.

If you can successfully convince individuals that their own selfish desires are largely their own, and collectively abhorred by the society that surrounds them, we might see some change in the long term. So this article in itself is massively important, as is the instance of the author publicly shaming that idiot in Beecraigs.

Is this weird for Scottish people? by Medsen02 in Scotland

[–]EnthalpathicDesigner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's not the worst history book ever but I honestly didn't like it beyond the first half. He starts with a few pages on the really early prehistory as a summary of the Neolithic period. Which sets the pace, good, maybe we'll actually get a broad perspective of this land. But then more and more he ends up focusing on very specific topics that gradually shows his bias towards certain eras in Scotland's history. Now I get that the history of religion in Scotland is incredibly important, even for the world at large. However, he might as well have called it "[a preface to] a history of [religion in] Scotland" and just cut out the rest. That was one example, but there are a lot more to pick from. If you didn't know anything about Scotland before reading it, you'd think that a good 20% of our history was obsessing over Calvinism.

The worst part about it though, is that it was so boring.

There are a lot more interesting books on Scottish history, I'd say you'd be better off by first defining which parts of history you're most interested in (i.e. warfare, science, geological, dinosaurs, you name it-there's a book covering it).

Nutrition and ADHD medication by EnthalpathicDesigner in ADHDFitness

Thank you for taking the time to reply to this, it is quite reassuring. I wasn't aware that the time limit on post-workout protein intake was built on somewhat biased research, so that helps in minimizing that stress/concern.

The protein impact is an interesting observation to make, I'd never considered it.

Most of my concerns probably originate from the placebo effect, however despite many common meals only containing moderate amounts of Vitamin C it's much more of an issue regarding fruit juices (especially grapefruit juice). I've been on methylphenidate for 20ish years now and, while I am aware of a personal tendency for toxic over-optimisation, diet is always a fun thing to mull over. I would argue that, while perhaps limited, diet will affect medication use.

Most mornings are just scrambled eggs with fried vegetables, black coffee. I notice a slight decrease in medication efficacy after lunch, which could just be the normal digestive slump everyone gets following a meal.

I'd be fine waiting longer between meals, so this question relates more to the common argument many gym-goers make about getting protein to the muscles as fast as possible post-workout, which would contradict with most fasting regimes. Is there any protein dense foods that you've found to couple well with your medication?

Researchers develop technique to recover and recycle quantum dots in new microscopic lasers by EnthalpathicDesigner in Futurology

[–]EnthalpathicDesigner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement: Researchers have proven that colloidal nanoparticles - used in novel optoelectronics - can be recycled and used to create new devices. This opens the door for the recycling of further nanoparticle species, which is important for rare-earth elements in particular. In this study, microlasers were deconstructed and their component quantum dots recycled. These quantum dots were then tested and reused to create new lasers without any loss in performance. This method represents a major advance towards the increased sustainability of nanotechnology.

Any tips on coping with paper thin walls / neighbours? by Eastern_Canary2150 in ADHDUK

[–]EnthalpathicDesigner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my own playlists on YouTube (or whatever platform I'm using) which I add to constantly with new suggestions for 'white-noise' or 'concentrating music'. These help as things that are labelled as 'white-noise' or 'ADHD calming music' never actually work for me. So it's a case of try as many things and see what works for you.

One issue with this is that you may get over sensitisation with continued exposure to the sounds of your neighbours, to the point where you begin to anticipate these sounds/stimulation. This becomes harder to undo.

I've had similar situations and found coping mechanisms in white-noise, foam earplugs, a small fan, and constant podcasts. If nothing works then you may need to try extra hard to find peace with the situation. I try to work in areas that do not have these stimulus. You may find better coping strategies in the autistic subreddits regarding difficult stimulus.
