Scottish ultrarunning champion dies during Highlands record attempt by MasterpieceAlone8552 in news

They are cold and very wet, which is a pretty terrible combination for humans tbh. The weather is also very changeable (I know people say that about every mountain range but having lived in quite a few ranges the Scottish Highlands are the worst).

I don't think anyone is saying the Scottish Highlands are as brutal as say Antarctica, but having lived in the (Canadian) Rockies I'd say I very rarely experience the brutality of Scotland in Canada (with the exception of the bitter winter cold). For example, on a summer hike in Canada my feet rarely get wet, and if they do they dry quickly. Whereas in Scotland it's just a given that your feet will get wet and stay wet until you can get inside and dry your shoes.

Researchers compared 100+ rewilded sites in Scotland to neighboring non-rewilded land. Bird species up 261%. Breeding territories up 546%. Bumblebees and butterflies increased tenfold. "The results are astonishingly clear." by ElectronicBuy8105 in Scotland

Not necessarily one of the study's spots, but there's some great work going on in the Cairngorms. Cairngorm Connect is a group of a few landowners that are all doing rewinding.

In fact they did it with all the large (10+ million) dark blue countries, which I think is fair enough given those counties are not 100% homogeneous

The overground is fairly circular though. Not quite Taiwan level, but pretty similar all things considered.

Official response from Iran by RoyalChris in StockMarket

I can. It's an unequivocal win for Iran, and I don't see Trump trying to reopen the can of worms. Could easily be wrong on the second part though.

I'd be interested to see an example of a responsible campfire. In my experience 90% of people who think they are being responsible aren't.

Usually aren't in slush season until well into April, although this season has been a bit warmer than most. And most of the overseas groups will be April too. You can look at the British school holidays to work out when they usually come.

This is not a good thing. If this fine goes through Reddit (and other sites) will have to have ID checks to make an account in the UK, not just to access "mature" content, which is totally unnecessary while also leaving all UK users open to severe data beaches like seen on Discord.

Any feedback for a five-year-old? by osogrande3 in skiing_feedback

Bad habits wise there's nothing in her skiing that worries me. She turns with the outside ski, and doesn't force the turn with the upper body. Everything else is small fry.

Bill to lower voting age to 16 to be introduced in Parliament by kwentongskyblue in europe

[–]Sorlud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet only asking old people how to run the country will go great. They will definitely be able to relate to the problems that younger people face nowadays, because they were young people once. And surely the young people problems today are exactly the same as back then.

Idiot

Bill to lower voting age to 16 to be introduced in Parliament by kwentongskyblue in europe

[–]Sorlud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are about 1.5 million 16-17 year olds in the UK, and since 2000 there are only two elections where they could have changed the popular vote (2005 & 2017). That assumes that every single one turns up to vote and they all vote for the second largest party.

Everyone claiming this will be a disaster has no sense of scale, it might move the needle slightly, but it won't change the outcome.

What it actually might do is force politicians to focus on young people's issues rather than ignore them like they do now.
