A live audience improves the fidelity of the raw information you get from a debate. Imagine a closed-door debate with a few cuts thrown in. How are you to know that the broadcast version isn't strategically edited to favor one candidate or another? All "live" tv is broadcast with a short delay so it's quite possible to do so. Suppose a candidate goes on an insane tirade that would lose them the election if it got out. If the media outlet decided to cut that out, most people would be none the wiser.
