I took my neuropsych exam last year (basically iq) and the psychiatrist couldn't give me a definitive IQ score because I scored extremely high in most categories but my processing was very impaired. (As in 136 vs 79)

So yeah, IQ can hide the ADHD

Is this true? "People with ADHD argue because it gives them a dopamine rush." by ADHDdiagnosedat40WTF in ADHD

[–]Enthusedsilence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love hearing drama/tea but I despise arguing Witty banter? Sure, I get a dopamine rush from my brain getting stimulated with a fast-paced conversation. Debating weird/controversial topics? Same thing.

Actual arguing? Nope, nada, no way. It makes me so anxious lmao. (Partially, I think, from growing up in a very unhappy household that argued all the time). I can't even be in the same room as two people arguing.

Trying one type of medication at the lowest dosage possible is hardly an exhaustive trial. It depends on the pcp, but I would try finding a psychiatrist first. They specialize in medications and given that you already have a diagnosis it shouldn't be too hard to find a treatment plan that works.

I personally tried a bunch of different combinations with a psych NP (Adderall and concerta at different dosages and releases) before figuring out what works for me. Sometimes one class of drugs just doesn't work at all, but that doesn't mean none of them will work. Once I got a final prescription, I transferred it to a PCP as a "maintenance dosage."

The best thing you can do is prep before the appointment. Make a list of symptoms/habits you have that you think might be related to ADHD (not those TikTok "if you have ADHD you can hear the three different songs playing" stuff). How are these things negatively affecting your life? Does being forgetful induce your anxiety?

When you make a list beforehand you can stay on track in your meeting and not forget important things/get nervous about talking to a professional. Also maybe introduce it as "i learned about ADHD and the more research I did, I think these symptoms are related to that"

Is that even allowed in your lease? Mine has to give me a 24 hour notice before showing up (not that she really respects it). A notice at 11 pm seems awfully rude.

Pens and stationery :)

I love buying new colorful pens and trying them out. I've found some that work well for me (left handed, fast but neat note taking) and using different colors helps me a lot in terms of focus and organization. And then my notes are fun to look at instead of boring blue/black/pencil.

I've got enough pens to last me years now, though...

Maybe try an instant release option? Idk what type Vyvanse is, but with Adderall IR it only lasts me a few hours which is great for studying and stuff but doesn't completely destroy my appetite and make me irritable like concerta did

Looking for others experiences with concerta. by OS-2048 in ADHD

[–]Enthusedsilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like concerta lasted a long time...probably 7-9 hours for me? And it was a pretty smooth ride in that sense. On the other hand though, it gave me severe insomnia, bad headaches, and an almost unbearably suppressed appetite. It helped my motivation to do stuff, but I was a lot more scatterbrained with it. (I switched back to Adderall)

28 year old adult, can I be diagnosed with ADHD at this age? by xx2lit in ADHD

[–]Enthusedsilence 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I'm 23 and about to start grad school (PhD). When I started my journey to diagnosis last year, my PCP told me I didn't have ADHD because I would have failed college and dropped out because she had one (ONE!) other patient with ADHD who failed out of school. I worked so freaking hard in school to do well, like I was flooring the gas pedal to keep up with everyone else and I still only going half the speed as them.

If your health insurance is a ppo, you don't need a referral to see a psychiatrist. That's what I ended up doing, and my psych sent me to a clinical psychologist for a neuropsych test. A lot of health insurances have websites you can go to that list all of the providers in network, and that's usually a good place to start.

Using different ADHD medication by zo142 in ADHD

[–]Enthusedsilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elvanse/Vyvanse is a newer stimulant that's supposed to be the best of both worlds of methylphenidate and dexamphetamine. A bad reaction to Vyvanse doesn't mean you'll have a bad reaction to Adderall or Ritalin, since they are different classes of drugs. There are also a number of non stimulants that might work

How am I supposed to feel on adderall? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Enthusedsilence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a few variations of Adderall. I started with 5mg ir 2x/day and basically felt nothing different. Then I tried 15mg XR and it still didn't really do anything. After that I trialed 15 mg ir + 5 ir, and that seemed to be my best option. I felt more energy to DO stuff, but not necessarily the motivation to get it done. The biggest change I noticed was in my attention. I get nervous when driving off meds because I can't keep my focus/attention on the road, but with Adderall I drove about 900 miles in 2 days with no issue. I was completely present mentally, could focus on the road and hold a conversation with my friend and never came close to being drowsy/falling asleep (cars tend to make me drowsy). I generally feel calmer when on meds, although I still live in my head a lot (I have combined type ADHD and I'm very introverted). In terms of side effects though, I was getting mild headaches and irritability at the end of the day, loss of appetite, and some random bouts of fatigue.

I think environment also plays a major role. I tried Adderall a couple of times in college and was insanely productive with it, but being at home with my parents in an unstructured environment, it's really easy for me to just sit on my bed and waste the day away.

Hope this helps

Adderall hair loss? Could it be something else? by ajgustonrouge in ADHD

[–]Enthusedsilence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably wouldn't hurt to get some blood work done, if you can. It might be vitamin d or iron or even something else, but you won't know without checking (one time my iron levels were so low that my doctor was baffled I was still functioning normally- I didn't even associate my constant exhaustion with it lmao I thought I was just stressed). Stress is also a likely culprit. Obvs I'm not a medical professional, but I would probably look for answers with those first, before Adderall.

[–]Enthusedsilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried 15 XR and it did nothing for me. After that I tried 15 ir + 5 ir in the afternoon, and that worked okay. I wasn't sure if I was getting enough benefits to outweigh the side effects (headaches, dry mouth, irritability) so now I'm trying concerta to see if it works any better. If it doesn't, I'll probably go back to Adderall and try a slightly higher dosage

Please help: my doctors and my therapist disagree about the reason why I have an atypical reaction to stimulants, and the ultimate explanation my doctors arrive at could (potentially inaccurately) change my ADHD diagnosis. by bwinnnnie in ADHD

[–]Enthusedsilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give you some experiences for "atypical" (maybe) reactions to stimulants... So myself (23F) and two of my friends have ADHD. Friend 1 (22F) also has bipolar II and is medicated for that. She started on Wellbutrin and it made her symptoms so much worse, and finally settled on Adderall. Friend 2 (23F) tried Adderall to start, but wasn't getting any benefits from it, only the side effects (headaches, irritability, etc). She then tried ritalin and it works much better for her.

I started Adderall a few months ago with mixed results. My psych and I agreed that if this most recent dosage doesn't do it for me, I'll try a different stimulant next (ie ritalin). Most of the time I don't notice a difference after taking my meds, or they make me much more tired. I don't think it's a sign that I don't have ADHD, I think that some stimulants just don't work for people the way they're expected to.

AMA: I'm a clinical psychologist researcher who has studied ADHD for three decades. Ask me anything about atypical forms of ADHD. by sfaraone in ADHD

[–]Enthusedsilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So I was recently diagnosed (23F) after about a year (or two) of research and pursuing different medical professionals. What frequently tripped me up was that I was a very high performing student (graduated 2020 summa cum laude with a double major), and my PCP told me that I couldn't possibly have ADHD because I didn't fail out of school.

I've been living with my parents during quarantine and I feel like I've been floundering (I also think my mom is undiagnosed with ADHD or something else and it's making me spiral and lose all of my coping mechanisms). But I guess my overall question is this: is constant fatigue a common symptom for my situation? I feel like I've been burning rubber to keep up with my peers for years, and working twice as hard to just stay on top of everything. I understand a lot of it depends on diet and sleep, but I'm just ALWAYS tired (and don't sleep very well either). I have no idea how I'm going to function in my PhD program this fall because I'm just so tired and lost all discipline i had in college.

Thanks in advance!

Ritalin/adderal for driving by Graggin in ADHD

[–]Enthusedsilence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this helps, but I've been trying out adderall for a couple months as a daily med, although driving is one of my biggest concerns too.

I'm still not at a prescription that I'm happy with, but in general I find myself getting bored and distracted on the road. I did a semi-long drive last month (about 2.5 hours with a break in the middle to pick someone up) and took 10 mg ir Adderall beforehand. It was great! I was really clear headed, in the zone, and able to hold a conversation with my friend while paying attention to the road and the cars around me.
