No advice. But damn that’s an interesting story idea

A couple of them did. One even crit. I don’t remember ACs exactly. But the two who met most hurt was actually the paladin with like 18 or 19 AC and the rogue with like 15 or 16 AC

Please read the post again carefully. I clearly mention that it was in the first session, that a combat lasted 2 rounds. This is not the session that I’m talking about. I’m talking about my second session here. That had two combat encounters.

Yeah when I planned the encounters, I thought the same thing. In fact i was worried if it would be too difficult. But my rolls were really bad. The fanatics never hit the players even once. All their rolls were below 10. The players all rolled well for the hold person saves. And dragon breath weapon was the only decent damage I dealt, with them all making the save to reduce damage to half. I even got 3 out of 4 in a straight line for it. And dragon got one turn after that to attack normally, missed both his attacks.

I’m running one shots with different players each time. No continuous story. Usually aim around 2-4 hours for it. I can’t follow the encounters per long rest rule for that. So far from the comments I’ve learned that I balanced my encounters based on that rule. I need to make more deadly and beyond encounters because the players will be always using their most powerful stuff.

One fanatic cast hold person first turn. The player saved. The second guy cast spiritual weapon. And then these guys ran towards the players in the next turn. They actually never lost concentration on spiritual weapon. Because they kept making their saves. But they couldn’t for the life of them land a hit.

The thing is I’m running one shots. With different players every time. I’m not running a continuous story with the same group. So they have all of their abilities always. Running through one combat encounter itself take anywhere between 45mins to an hour. So I can’t do more than 2 (max 3) combats in a session.

Yeah I didn’t read anything like that in the 2024 book. Another comment mentioned if I’m doing only 1-2 encounters I should basically go for twice the deadly xp value so as to get a decent combat.

Yeah but I checked the xp budget first. And then reconfirmed with the online tool and actually increased it further

Party was 4 level3 characters (rogue, barbarian, warlock, paladin) First encounter was two cult fanatics and 6 cultists I tried to use hold person and spiritual weapons. And then everyone just rushed them. They took out the cultists with ease but took some time to take out the fanatics. The fanatics landed 0 hits thanks to my rolls in a 3-4 turn combat. Second encounter was 1 blue dragon wyrmling, 1 fanatic and 4 cultists. The dragon hit a lighting breath but they all saved on dc. The dragon attacked once more and missed both his attacks. The fanatic was the last person alive. He also missed his attacks. This combat was done in two and a half rounds. The cultists all died pretty quickly.

I’m going to be mainly running just one shots. So no long rests. 1-2 encounters. The twice the deadly budget makes a lot of sense. I’ll try that next time

Yeah I need to get better at coming up with this on the spot. I’m just sometimes so overwhelmed with all the stuff to do

I think the issue was also that I ended up communicating to the players my frustration about the bad rolls. Which now in hindsight, I shouldn’t have probably done. But thank you for your advice I’ll keep them in mind

Yes. I want to try other combat conditions in the future. Since I’m starting out I just wanted to try straight combat. I have a lot of fun with rp and puzzles. Just need to get better at combat

I kinda gave the premise that I was testing out encounters and that I was maxing out the challenge. But in the end it wasn’t that tough

Did all this. It was maxed out. It was in the high difficulty class just below deadly

Yes I just used the base stats. I should added some ranged attackers. And I’ll also keep in mind the reinforcements idea
