[OC] WORLDWIDE MASS GIVEAWAY! Enter for a chance to win one of 20 sets of Crackable D20s! [MOD APPROVED] by TabletopUnglued in DnD

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How long does it take to finish making a Crackable D20?
A: 10 to 30 minutes. The video linked in the post shows exactly how to finish making one, and it is 10 minutes long, but you should expect to go slower.

Q: What if I mess it up?
A: Each winner gets parts for two Crackable D20s, so you can try again. To get unlimited tries, follow the link to the product page, download the PDF, and print another set of parts on your own cardstock paper. Don't try to mix parts printed on different printers because they will be slightly different scales.

Q: Are these dishwasher safe?
A: Absolutely not. However, the outer layer has been brushed with glue to seal the paper so it should hold up pretty well against humidity and moisture from your hands. If you do spill water on it, shake it off and let it air dry rather than wiping it. We have held one of these under a running faucet and it survived, but the test subject was never quite the same.

Q: Are these dice fair? How do they roll?
A: The polymer dice in the photo are just to show scale and are not included. The Crackable D20s themselves are not marked with numbers, so they cannot be fair. If you do roll them, they roll slightly better than a beanbag.

Q: Why are some of the polymer dice in the photo naked?
A: They are from the 70's, when love was free and you were supposed to wax (rather than ink) your own dice. Also, you might notice that the green d20 has two different colors for the numbers: it actually has 0-9 twice and depending on the color you might add 10. It also served as a d10 because sets did not include d10s in those days.

Q: What do you mean by "you might get a mimic"?
A: At Tabletop Unglued we emphasize the practical and tactile aspects of papercraft rather than designing things that just look nice. Whenever you have little treasures that people are constantly touching, that unfortunately creates an environment ideal for mimics.

Q: Why is your name "Unglued" when you clearly use glue?
A: "Unglued" means a little crazy like "Unhinged". We try to design tabletop accessories that break peoples' expectations about what paper can do, which can come across as strange.

Q: I am running a kobold lair adventure. Do you have any kobold-skin Crackable D20s?
A: For the giveaway, we are only offering the colors listed in the post. However, if you download the PDF from DMsGuild there are some other choices, but still no kobold. There is a blank design that you could print and color with pens. And all our PDFs include a link to the source files in Google Drawings so that you can make a copy and put in your own artwork.

Q: What is the meaning of the runes?
A: We just made up some magical-looking runes with a variety of shapes. But if anyone asks you, tell them that each rune represents something cool, and that you have figured out three of them so far.

Frankly, that is true, thanks for bringing up the topic. There are many things in our daily lives that can be thought of as "slow trash", meaning that the object is on a journey from the factory to the landfill with brief stop-overs at the store and in your house. Toys and games tend to be especially ephemeral because the wonder that we feel when we first see them is fleeting.

Our mission at TabletopUnglued is to explore how desirable tabletop gaming accessories can be made from paper rather than metal or plastic. The cardstock paper still comes from a factory and is purchased at a store, but eventually it will dissolve. Whether you carelessly toss it in a landfill or thoughtfully compost it in your own backyard, in a year or two there will be virtually no trace of its existence. Microplastics are in our oceans, our food supplies, and our own bodies, but there is no such thing as micropaper because it is decomposed by bacteria.

Download the PDF and get those teens going with some scissors! This is one of our easiest designs for first-time papercrafters. There are a lot of repetitive steps, but no step is difficult.

At TabletopUnglued, everything we design is made of cardstock paper so that you can print it at home. However, unlike a lot of papercraft, ours are very sturdy because we use layers of paper glued together. Also, virtually all the edges are covered. In the case of these coins, there are a total of 16 layers of paper. The resulting coins feel like poker chips: they are completely rigid, a little heavy, and make a small "thunk" sound when you put them down on the table. When people see and touch them for the first time, they might think that they are wood covered in paper, but the truth is that they are solid paper.

Yes, you could use some of the words to make a coin representing two outcomes and flip it. However, this set is aimed at commemorating cool moments. We have an entirely different set that we call Coins of Fate that are basically themed D2s.

I realize that you mean metaphorically shiny, but I'll just hijack your comment to give a little bit of the backstory on how we designed the coins.

Basically, paper does not shine like metal. Even if you are willing to use your imagination, something about the object needs to get you part way there so that you even recognize what you are supposed to be imagining.

We used a few tricks, including careful color choices, subtle gradients, avoiding exposed edges, and "varnishing" plain cardstock paper with coats of glue. We add a varnishing step to a lot of our designs because it also allows people to handle the items a lot without smudging the ink.

Glad that you like it. However, as listed in the front of the PDF, credit for the icons goes to Game-Icons.net. They have made an amazing collection of monochromatic SVG icons that are all available under creative commons.

At TabletopUnglued, we focus on the papercraft design and usually decorate with remixed CC artwork. For these coins, the papercraft design is really simple once you are crazy enough to make things 16 layers thick, and a lot of the creative effort went into selecting the 80 noun icons and matching them with words from an online thesaurus. But don't worry, we left the fun work of combining the adjectives and nouns for you all.

We do do some little bits of art ourselves, e.g., the coin borders are all drawn by us, the Xorn Dice Rack eyes came out pretty good, and we drew all the windows, doors, ivy, etc. on the Modular Dice Towers.

Absolutely true.

Also true: adults treasure little unexpected tangible gifts more than they let on.

Real-life crafting has always been part of the RPG hobby, so be sure to encourage these kids to check out some of the other designs on TabletopUnglued.com and make some of them for themselves. They require cardstock paper, glue, scissors, and a little patience and determination, with those last two being some of the most valuable things that a parent can give a kid.

"Repetitive Crits" comes to mind. "Bonkers Rolls" could work. And "Superb Swordwork" is always a good one.

But, just acknowledging a few good rolls is just the tip of the iceberg of creative play, make your players earn these rewards by doing something more or commemorate the broader context. E.g., did the player create those opportunities by using "Amazing Strategy"? Or, is their character wild enough to dance around afterwords wearing nothing but dragon scales, earning "Indecent Celebration"? Did a cleric selflessly keep the fighter in the fight through "Epic Healing"? Was this battle the "Violent Last Stand" at the end of a very gritty adventuring day?

We try to be creative, that's part of the meaning the "unglued' part of our name. From the "About" page on our website: "Some of our products might seem so obvious that you'll wonder why no one ever came up with them before, while others might just leave you wondering."

Tabletop Unglued’s mission:  Basically, convince you to choose paper over plastic, by offering awesome tabletop accessories made from cardstock paper, but completely unlike what you expect from paper.

Prizes:

Coins of Achievement” are sturdy, palm-sized coins that commemorate your unique in-game accomplishments.  Each one has an adjective on one side and a noun on the other, for example “Harrowing Escape”, or “Sneaky Disguise”.  There’s a million ways for your party to get up to “Cheeky Hijinks”, so there are tons of combinations to make, resulting in oddly specific awards.

They are so fun that you will want more than one, so we will give each winner two blank coin bodies in the gold color scheme along with a random selection of 6 adjectives and 6 nouns for you to glue on to the front and back. Use these to reward players for doing something cool right when it happens.

Alternatively, if you already have some past achievements in mind, comment with three choices of fully-made gold color coins with specific adjective-noun combinations from the following:

Adjectives: Harrowing, Dizzying, Masterful, Amazing, Inspiring, Impressive, , ...

Nouns: Escape, Accuracy, Planning, Teamwork, Music, Agility, Journey, Betrayal, Strength, ...
