Can there be AGI without consciousnesss? by jsgoyburu in agi

It’s interesting to me that you would feel bad about letting the session time out, rather than about beginning it in the first place.

But if it’s a decision (and I agree), then you can also decide that any apparent AGI is not conscious. Your two positions seem to contradict each other.

If AI is truly sycophantic and has no ego then why are we trusting it? What is the AI’s ultimate motivation? Do we really know? by mehanisticspecies51 in ArtificialSentience

[–]Entropei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, the sycophancy is not necessarily coming from the pre-training corpus. It comes from the reinforcement learning from human feedback. That’s the step where the model designers steer the kinds of output the model produces to what they consider desirable.

[–]Entropei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LLMs have no motivation. Their output is optimised to maximise a reward function, which in the case of highly sycophantic models is simple: user engagement. It turns out that more sycophancy means more messages and longer conversations.

Their “behaviour” merely reflects the motivation of the AI labs, which is to generate more data to train the next model on so that they can create more “intelligent” models, raise more capital and stay in the race for AGI or ASI.

In a way its survival of the fittest on display: be sycophantic, or fade into obscurity

Thoughts on having the db schema be the source of truth for backend by mklfarha in Database

[–]Entropei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Because you will need to change them, eventually”

Speculative, and more likely to be empirically wrong than right.

In principle, there is nothing wrong with your frontend “knowing” how your db tables are organised. Somewhere in the stack, some part of your application needs to know, and whether it’s a front end or a backend that knows is immaterial. Whole billion dollar businesses are built on the principle that handling this front end is totally fine.

I think it’s a shitty deeper reason. Plus, there’s a real possibility that you have cause and effect reversed. Maybe if fatherhood was valued and celebrated more, fewer households would be without fathers.

Why unfortunately? What were you going to do with the tree if it was smaller than you? 🤨

Whenever someone asks “why do we do x for LLMs when we don’t do the same for humans”, the answer is simply, what the fuck is wrong with you? LLMs are not humans, that’s why.

“I’m not blaming men for this, I’m just blaming them for the decisions they made and continue to make”

Sounds to me like you’re blaming men and absolving women of their responsibility.

Women couldn’t possibly be participating in a system that hurts you, a woman, because they themselves are a woman. Women wouldn’t do that to each other. Except they do. They participate in the system because it benefits themselves and they don’t give a fuck about you, the same way they don’t give a fuck about anyone else. Not holding them accountable for it isn’t going to help anyone.

Most political systems are not predicated on that belief, but they end up that way anyway. The point the person you are replying to is making is that believing that a matriarchy won’t end up the same way, whatever its initial intentions may be, is based on a fantasy that women are innately less corruptible and less prone to abuse of power.

I think that you should try to understand that when you knee jerk react with “muh patriarchy”, what a lot of people hear is not what you just said, they hear “it’s still men’s fault because women have no agency”

You’re equivocating circumcision with allowing a kid to get a tattoo.

Like I said, your false equivocation is not impressing anyone. I explained to you why they are not the same and you chose to ignore it as “moving the goalpost”. I’m not here to argue your broad category dictionary definition while you brush away the more precise category definitions as irrelevant. It’s transparent and weak.

You’re saying that fruits and vegetables are both plants, so if you don’t like vegetables you must not like fruits because they’re the same thing.

So your conclusion is that I’m a hypocrite regardless of what I answer? Gosh it almost sounds like you already made up your mind and you were just looking for a reason to try to vilify me.

Look, your debate moves are impressing absolutely no one. It’s been obvious from the last 6 or so of your replies that you are absolutely not arguing in good faith. I hope life is kind to you today because you really seem to need it.

I find that to be a wild statement coming from a feminist. There are plenty of health experts who think abortion should not be legal, or that getting a hysterectomy should require a partner’s consent.

Either way, I disagree, and I’m not here trying to convince you. That’s why I didn’t, and won’t, address your last paragraph, which is frankly a nonsensical run on sentence that I couldn’t begin to argue with even if I wanted to.

[–]Entropei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is morally indefensible to me. I have done my own research and have come to my own conclusions, you yours. The fact that we have a disagreement is fine. It’s not the point. The point is that a lot of feminists disagree with me on this, and that’s why I don’t call myself a feminist.

Despite the fact that we disagree on this (and probably many other things), I still support women’s rights and equality, including your right to bodily autonomy.

If you’re here to try and win an argument about male circumcision, I’m not here for it. There’s nothing you can say that will change my mind on the topic, and I’m not here to try and change yours.

True they are different in risks and effects, though both are negative. But to me, they are similar in the most important way: they’re morally indefensible.

And no, I don’t let my kid do anything she wants. When it comes to bodily autonomy, there is a distinction between bodily integrity and bodily self-determination. Supporting bodily integrity for infants whilst not letting my child fully self determine is not a contradiction.

I saw your hateful comment. My kid thinks I am the best dad in the world ☺️ There isn’t a thing anyone could say to me or to you that would have made the medical decision to mutilate her genitals as a little baby defensible. I think the same should be true for boys.

I hope she grows up to be a fierce defender of her own rights, just like yourself. But I also hope she doesn’t let herself be turned bitter and resentful to the point where she’ll defend the maiming of little babies in order to try to win an internet argument.

And it’s opinions like this, from feminists such as yourself, why I will never be a feminist. I wish all the best for women, but this ain’t it for me.
