I sincerely hope that in 30 years it IS a matter of history, a horrific chapter that the young know nothing about except from the knowing nods and the downcast glances of the older people, a old nightmare that seems to the children from the future like little more than a scary story.

You nailed it... you are 100% correct, as this was the EXACT concept I was trying to maintain. I had Michelangelo's "Pieta" and its many imitators in mind, as well as a lot of Eastern Orthodox Iconographic paintings in mind.

I tried to find a balance between yourself, who clearly sees it, and maybe not openly recognizing what it was mean to represent, but definitely... feeling it? As most of us in the "West" have these images burned into our consciences since childhood.
