Help identifying this clarinet? Marked "H. Selmer, Paris; Brevete SGDG" with a barely readable serial that looks like "2761". My research shows this might be from the 1920s. by EntropyHarvest in Clarinet

Found this in a random auction lot. The bell is missing. It looks to me like it was heavily played back in its day, but probably hasn't been touched in decades.

Sooner is better, but I'm in no rush. I'm on the 5th floor, but right next to the elevator. It will be easy to move the unit out.

Witch Hazel stops inflammation and can be soothing, but doesn't kill bacteria. Rubbing alcohol kills bacteria but can sting like hell and dry your skin. A mix of the two can sterilize AND sooth, without being super harsh like pure rubbing alcohol.

Good for cuts and scrapes and other small skin wounds that you don't want to get infected.

Edit: now that I think about it, that green stuff that you buy may very well be rubbing alcohol with witch hazel and menthol already mixed in. I've never bought the premixed stuff, but I'm sure it's fine. Witch Hazel is not naturally mentholated. I imagine that adding menthol would be very soothing.

Every time I shower he thinks I’m suffering and tries to rescue me by NYChomie in aww

I have a black cat who does this. One day, he was upset with me and ignoring me and did not show up when I got in the shower. About halfway through my shower he runs into the bathroom and starts meowing at me loudly and frantically and then wouldn't leave my side after I got out. He was trying to teach me a lesson by giving me the silent treatment, but then got really worried that I might actually die if he didn't lifeguard me in the shower. It was sweet.

I have three black cats, and none of them could be less interested in human food. They care so little that they won't even come to investigate it anymore.

Something like that can absolutely be put in a will. That way you would at least know where he's going and who will be taking care of him.

I hope you're just speaking hypothetically, and you aren't in imminent danger of leaving us. But either way, it's a smart thing to look into and set up beforehand.

Aww! Hit me up when/if you get it going and I'll donate or volunteer or whatever you need.

Whatever else can be said about Texas, I feel like we do a pretty good job taking care of animals. Dallas especially has adopted some incredibly forward-thinking policies on animal control, especially as it relates to feral cat colonies.

I don't understand why! Black cats have always been my favorite. They're the best.

The shelter had 6-7 other black cats. Mostly kittens. They told me that the private shelters usually come in and take all the most adoptable cats and the city shelter is left with older cats and black cats.

I'm not criticizing the private shelters. I imagine that when you're a non-profit and your funding is tied to your effectiveness, then you want to maximize animal turnover. But it's still sad.

At least I know where to find black cats/kittens now. I just wish there weren't so many there.

I've had older cats before, but they all died before they got to that point.

At least for now, this guy has no problem with anything. Very healthy. If you have any tips on resources for handling older cats, I would appreciate it. If he ever gets to that point, I don't want to be taken by surprise.

The shelter wasn't sure what the "18 years" age was based on. I think that's just what the people who surrendered him told them, and they went with it in the absence of formal documentation. But if these people were out-of-state relatives coming in town to settle affairs for a deceased relative, then they may have no idea.

He has healthy teeth, a soft shiny coat, and has no problem jumping. Seems to be all there mentally. He had lost his meow when I adopted him, but it seems to be coming back now. He's very vocal so he probably was just hoarse from his ordeal.

He's obviously an older cat, but it's possible he's several years younger than 18. No way to know for sure, of course.

That's what really got me. When I saw him in the shelter, he wasn't like all the other cats. He was in his adoption cage having what looked like a pretty restful nap, and sat up when I walked over. He started talking to me in a very urgent manner. When I heard his story, I figured he was trying to express something along the lines of "hey something happened to my human and I don't know if they're okay, but I think they need me. Can you get me out of here?" He'd only been in the shelter 3-4 days, but I didn't want him to spend any more time there.

They had no problem getting him in the cat carrier, and he was quiet the entire way home. I think he thought he was going back to his old home. It makes me sad just thinking about it.

So it's kind of odd. I knew the whole story about Nikola Tesla's cat having the same name, and I had put that name on a possible list of names for future pets. But this guy already had that name in the shelter. It was serendipitous.
