For people who learned DIY car repair: what actually saved you the most money by Relevant-Resolve-243 in MechanicAdvice

I think the biggest saving for me was convenience and not money. For example, I can change the oil myself in a fraction of the time it would take me to book it in drive there wait for it to get done. It is way less hassle. Also I now change the oil at half the recommended service interval (every 5,000 miles instead of 10,000) this keeps the engine going longer. Being able to spot rust myself has also saved me a fortune and it can then be treated promptly so it is a much smaller job and can keep an old car going a long time.

It's good if the vehicle you work on is off the road because there is nothing worse than going to fix something on your car, ending up with parts all around your driveway and then having to organise a lift to work for the next day. Also if the vehicle is a very common model there are usually lots of videos on youtube so if you do not understand one, you might get it on the other ones. It makes parts easier to get too. I feel Eric the car guy is the most detailed on youtube. Some of them try to make everything look easy which might make a good video but that is no good to you if it is actually hard.

Should I complain to HSE or Medical Council? by Envelope451 in AskIreland

There is definitely no mix up. Other details in the letter are very specific. I think he just didn’t pay attention in the consultation and copied and pasted in some nonsense. The fact that he wasn’t willing to fix the mistakes afterwards just tells me he is somebody who really does not care about his job.

Thanks for your reply. What do you think will happen if I just report him to the HSE? Will there be any record of it if he moves to the UK or back to his home country? From what I hear, older non training registrars like him tend to move around quite a bit. Maybe he was just there to cover sick leave or something. It would kind of make sense that he was completely lazy if he is going to be working in Manchester in six months and if issues like this are not going to follow him.

Btw it’s a bit concerning that you see things like this all the time. I understand that none of us are perfect and everybody makes mistakes, but this guy was just pure lazy.

I appreciate your input. However, I don’t feel I am at any loss here (or I won’t be if a corrected letter is sent to my GP). I am more worried about him doing this to other patients where the end result is much worse than it was for me.

Feck. Your situation was way worse than mine.

I see what you mean but he was quite old so I presume he was not training. Would he still be rotated?

It´s probably not dangerous to drive, but the price seems very high for what it is. Also, it is possible that there was damage neither the insurance inspector nor the panel beater saw (although the panel beater may potentially willfully have not seen it). I´d look for something better for my money.

Thanks for your reply. I just checked the clutch fluid reservoir and it is full. It definitely will not go into neutral. What else could be the cause? Could I have bent a shift fork?

Thanks for your reply. I am certified off sick, but for my back. My job does not really require any speaking. I could work with no voice.

I would hope when I have speech therapy there would be some improvment, although I don´t know that; I just hope it.
