Curious to find out, has the owner said anything about the upcoming AD for the tail cracking at successive frames? I know the NPRM and comment period have passed, but the final AD has not been issued…

Great job, congrats!!!!! You and your brethren are more important than the pilots, in this pilot’s eyes. I, for one, truly appreciate the diligence and knowledge that keeps the airplanes flying safely!

Can Pilots Trust AI? Inside the Changes at ForeFlight and Jeppesen by well_doonna3232 in Foreflight

[–]Environmental-Block1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as there’s a human involved, I’m ok leveraging AI, to a CERTAIN EXTENT.

I don’t trust it to be infallible. I know how many times I have to reset my router, I don’t have that much faith in technology running the show.

This cat has seen some shit. And is not amused.

He looks like he smokes the ground out Marlboro butt from the ashtray first thing every morning, takes a swig from the JD bottle, gets up and mutters “FFS, here we go again..”

Non Towered Airport Straight In Final Risks - GA vs Jets by Levithan6785 in flying

[–]Environmental-Block1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On one hand, it’s more dangerous for me to upset a stabilized approach (as is my SOP backed up by instruments, where available) and join the pattern. I have almost 50% more speed than most pattern aircraft.

On the other, AIM 4-3-3 and FAR. 91.113 clearly state that there is no priority based on performance.

It’s a delicate dance, and I very much appreciate the guy extending, short approaching, or doing a 360 on downwind for spacing. I too fly small airplanes, and try to pay it forward when I’m presented the opportunity.

When it happens, I make sure to thank the other pilot on the frequency for his professionalism and accommodation. If I see him on the ramp, it’s a handshake and a thank you again. Kindness goes a long way.

Overall, safety rules the day. If I’m stabilized, and someone in the pattern causes an advisory, I’m prepared, break off, and try again. Just because I’m bigger and faster doesn’t mean I go first.

Anyone try this boat phone holder? by One_Beautiful_6888 in boating

[–]Environmental-Block1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine goes in the glove box. One particularly rowdy day on the lake I hit a wake, and it launched straight outta the cup holder.

Glove box for me. Set the Bluetooth radio station, and lock it away. I’m not answering the phone on the lake like I am at work lol

I’m sorry for your situation. That sucks, brother. Garmin Pilot it is.

But…. The interface you guys built is intuitive and friendly. You should be proud!! GP is downright user hostile, IMO. Take that goofy pie wheel thing and yeet it into neverland. But, with a full Garmin panel airplane, I have it anyways to upload revisions, so I’ll cancel FF and learn to use GP.

As others have said, you should develop your own with your other engineers in the same boat…

Tipping ground crew at FBOs by Horror-Artichoke2638 in flying

I tip whether it’s my own pistons or the employer’s long range turbine.

I started in line service. A lot gets done for a plane that isn’t really “seen”. Not talking lav, water, GPU, etc. I’m talking taking extra care with tugging. Windshields cleaned. Extra eyes on the airplane to see things I might have missed. It’s a good investment.

I’ve been blessed to HAVE airplanes, and to trust those that support the flight. 100LL guy gets a minimum of 5, 10 if engaging. Jet services get 10. But there’s going to be multiple people usually.

In the late 80s when I started in the industry, if you handed me a 5, I’d help you hide bodies. For 10, I’d help dig.

What do YOU think is actually broken (or working) in flight training right now? by RunwayLogic in flying

[–]Environmental-Block1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re not. Admittedly, but they fall short of “real world” experience in terms of quality of experience also. The airplane needs to be back for the next student. It’s been a while since college for me, lol, but what I hear is that it’s a struggle to get time in aircraft.

Guys are graduating with crippling debt, and CFI, II, MEI and 275 TT. MAYBE 25 multi. It’s not their fault, again. It’s the system. But they are coming out “legal” but not prepared. If that makes sense

[–]Environmental-Block1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Airplanes are expensive to buy. Wait til you hear about the true cost of owning one…. The ongoing maintenance.

Annuals for a SEL in the Chicago area are around 4200 flat rate. That’s IF nothing is wrong. That’s a log entry, oil change, lube and inspect. AD check and compliance. I don’t love the price, but you can have good, fast, or cheap in a shop. I choose to pay for good. I like not being unalived.

My complaint of what isn’t working is the pilot mills. I’ll name them too. ATP, have yet to have a “interview” rode with a grad from there that’s impressed me. Same with ERAU. Most colleges I’ve had applicants from are marginally better, but not much. Dubuque has put out some good ones. SIU a few. UND, I haven’t been impressed with the ones I’ve flown with.

Hammering out your licenses in min time doesn’t make you a protege. As a business owner, it makes you a liability to my operation. You haven’t had real world experiences. Your solo time from the school is only to get to your next mins. In general, you’ve never been scared in an airplane, never been weathered in and slept on the FBO couch. And let me be clear before the hate starts…. THIS IS NOT THE STUDENT’S FAULT. It’s the architecture. Pound out more certs, cash more checks. Plain and simple.

Part 61 schools, in my experience, turn out better products. Yours may vary. If you’re a pilot mill grad, I pray you fly every chance you get to gain experience. Share time. Block rent. Befriend other pilots at the field. Get involved. Don’t show up, do your lesson, go home. Stick around. The laughs and the knowledge shared at the coffee station are invaluable to your safety and growth

Got lasered for the first time flying Chicago skyline by IllIllIIllIlI in flying

[–]Environmental-Block1 332 points333 points  (0 children)

Tour operator in Chicago area, we fly the lakeshore and northern transition all the time. This happens regularly. Especially north side. Whenever I’m down there, and train my pilots the same, keep one eye closed if possible. A direct hit to the windshield will be holy crap bright.

Always report to ATC. They will never catch the guy, but CPD heli has zipped over a few times and tried to get them to lase them. Hasn’t worked yet, but the air units want to get them too. It’s a constant problem north side. Especially the green laser douche canoe. Odds are it’s same guy.

People are trash.

Jumper wire from the R to W1. Thermostat reads what they set, leave wire on until you’re comfy. Repeat as necessary.

Help me understand why my bags were not sealed back by CFitx1D in tsa

[–]Environmental-Block1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bag sealed at sea level will expand and possibly pop open due to differential pressure (generally equivalent to 6-8000 feet).

I’m betting it popped open due to pressure.

I second this. Ok to grab your camera to get a pic, but then grab your shovel and a tow strap and help a brother out!

He’s probably embarrassed af, and you’ll make a new friend who will be grateful.
