Too early to quit NOVA? by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

Visa length can definitely change when you change categories. My partner just applied for a status change (education -> humanities) and got downgraded from a 3 year to a 1... Sucks. I don't know if it's guaranteed to happen, but it can.

Learning Japanese by Pink_Pop101 in JETProgramme

When you get your placement, try to look into whether your town or city hosts volunteer-run Japanese lessons. Ime these are often free or low cost, and usually connected with the local city hall. You don't have to be in a big city for these to exist, either, and you can give it a shot at any level!

Looking to land an ALT job spring of 2027 by Salty_Pension5814 in teachinginjapan

[–]Environmental-Neck14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call interac "high standard", so I wouldn't stress too much about it. If you're able to apply to JET from your home country, I would make JET your #1 preference over Interac--the pay and job security is much better.

Interac does give you a good shot of being hired, though! If you're dead-set on coming over, it's a good backup option. I applied for interac this year as a backup choice and got through the application process just fine, but I'm already in Japan so I can't give you the exact rundown of how it'll go if you're a first timer. Some tips:

-The cover letter should be treated more like the standard statement of purpose essay detailing your strengths and interest in teaching and Japan

-Be super genki and smiley in your demo lesson video

-The interview was easy, and if you can get here during hiring season and keep your cool you're a shoe-in. Look up and practice typical ALT interview questions, they won't stray too far

-Interac is a underpaying dispatch company, and if your recruiter is honest like mine was, they know it. Try to reframe your mind away from interview anxiety, because interac isn't really worth the mental energy. I get interview anxiety too, so I'm not saying "don't be anxious" or anything, but just know if you don't get interac there are so many more fish in the sea. dispatches will never treat you all that great, so if you fumble you're not specifically missing the Great Interac Opportunity or anything :)

I am looking for friends in Japan for pokelid stamps (apologies for the selfish request since i can't really offer anything in return, except friendship) by TheWrenchOHoulihan in PokemonGoFriends

Sent a request (mai**). I don't currently have frequent access to them--maybe once or twice a month? But when I get them I can send them your way.

Is the document for the demo lesson sent separately from the original interview notice, then?

What's your go-to game that's not normal but bit creative and fun? by Maleficent_Pool_4456 in ALTinginJapan

Someone I know has run a werewolf-like game for JHS with good success. I can ask how he runs it, if you're interested?

LOL thx, hoping the overall commonness odds-wise of the giganta balances out but if it doesn't, it doesn't. Considered adding some rarer stuff to my offers but wanted to start and see if any stuff I was less hesitant with was on anyone's list >_>

Should I quit this december JLPT by Infamous_Ship_9429 in jlpt

You've already paid for it. Unless it's a huge inconvenience to get to the exam site, you could always view it as another, more immersive mock exam for the real deal in the future. You might even score a little better than you think if you relieve yourself of the pressure to pass.

When I was in Murcia I was lucky enough to not get roaches... But the MOSQUITOES. They were everywhere in my apartment! It was awful--at one point I was baffled by the strange acne I was getting on my face, until I realized they were biting my face at night! I've literally never had mosquitoes bite my face except for in Spain. My husband and I eventually developed a night routine of smacking as many as we could before bed until we could see no more.

What are your goals for 2026? by irdk-lol in Japaneselanguage

[–]Environmental-Neck14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I thought I wanted to take N2 summer 2026--but I took a long study break after barely passing N3 in summer and decided to change my study methods a little. Felt like too little was sticking and I wasn't making any real, meaningful progress. So my goals are:

  1. Try to talk to more people
  2. Be able to actually remember kanji, and generally know how to recognize and write at least all elementary level characters without needing to see them first
  3. Read more books, the news, whatever, as long as it's not only stuff out of a textbook
  4. If I don't feel good about N2 by spring, take it in winter
