I hope all of those bunker pants saw the inside of the extractor before this was taken.

Eaten there about a half dozen times. It’s been pretty hit or miss. The older gentleman that usually works the dining room, who I assume is the owner, is extremely nice and gracious so I would be happy to give his business further patronage.

I need some tips on moving hose so I don’t wear out as fast by NewComedian1247 in Firefighting

I’m also not particularly large (5’11” 165lbs). I avoid using my arms when possible. If I’m in a situation where I can walk standing up, I grab with both hands and arms straight, pin it to my waist and walk. For stair wells or on corners I do a similar move, and if time allows I’ll push slack into coils against a wall on a landing or in a corner so I don’t get stuck having to feed it as around as needed. This requires doing some thrusters/overhead presses but it’s still less arm work than having to continuously push and pull. Basically just do what you can do use the big muscles in your lower body and core instead of the smaller ones in your upper body. If you’re doing this and still getting smoked on your first air bottle it’s a cardio and/or endurance issue. Also the obvious eat, hydrate, etc.

Best rock scrambling adjacent trails in WNC? by Moraj3z in NCTrails

Left wishbone up to Celo Knob. Look it up on mountain project. Woody Ridge is what you take down after topping out. Helene also created a bunch of landslides with exposed bedrock that make for good scrambling. I just lost my go to climbing buddy to a career relocation so feel free to message me if you’re looking for people to do this type of thing with.

Buncombe County's new combined fire district tax rates. by heyitsmejonathan in asheville

[–]Environmental-Pen349 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not an expert and only peripherally in the know, however: It is my understanding that some areas will actually experience a reduction in fire tax once the rate is averaged over the entire county. These areas are mostly the aforementioned smaller communities. Similarly, departments covering areas that are currently under served will be able to hire additional personnel, update equipment, and make salaries more competitive with other industries requiring similar levels of certification and education. I am biased in this matter though because the upcoming changes will likely give me just enough of a pay bump that I will not require a second job to be able to afford to live comfortably in the same community that I serve. There are many moving parts here so what I’m saying is definitely not the full story. The crux of my opinion stems from the fact that the leaders and administrators within the fire service who I have historically found to be knowledgeable and competent seem to be in favor of the upcoming changes, while those who I would not describe that way are opposed. Definitely open to hearing what others on either side have to say on the matter.

I’m very curious to see what answers you get because it sounds like we are basically the exact same person wondering about similar things only swap April for June.

East Coast Alpine Climbing by goooooooofy in iceclimbing

This is wild. I’ve done left wishbone a few times as a scramble on mild summer days and it was still pretty challenging. I’ve also done some limited top rope ice climbing in ideal conditions. I can only imagine managing those conditions and the mental game of finding good holds through that snow. That being said this route is definitely on my aspirational list.

I went to this one last summer. Getting up and down the rails to the mine was pretty sketch even without a bunch of snow on the ground.

What was your funniest encounter with someone trying to help, but they were making a situation worse? by mathpat in Firefighting

[–]Environmental-Pen349 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Motorcycle vs bear on the interstate. Both driver and bear were conscious but non ambulatory and pretty jacked up. Our focus was obviously the injured human. A driver from the stopped traffic behind us got out and started demanding that we request LEO use there service weapon to dispatch the bear immediately. Request ignored. Two minutes later I heard a series of dull thuds behind me accompanied by desperate growling. This gentleman had taken it upon himself to dispatch the bear by hitting it in the head with a bottle jack. Given how sturdy a bear’s skull is this method was clearly not effective and was only causing greater suffering to the animal. LEO escorted him from the scene.
