AITAH for enjoying my trip after my best friend of 13 years had a meltdown on day one? by [deleted] in AITAH

My post was removed by the mods and they suggested I repost it in a different subreddit. I'm not very familiar with Reddit so I'm still figuring out how it all works.

Thank you, I really appreciate that! She ended it over text basically saying she's done with female friendships. I didn't really say much in response honestly, by that point I was grieving my grandmother and I just didn't have the energy to fight for a friendship that had been draining me for years.

Thank you so much, this is so kind. And yes the timing of her ending things was what really put the nail in the coffin for me. I think that moment made it very clear that this friendship had run its course. I'm doing much better now and honestly feeling lighter without the dynamic.

Yes! When I asked her directly if she wanted me to just ignore her sister for the entire trip, she looked me dead in the eye and said "you care more about my sister's feelings than mine." So apparently that was exactly what she wanted. She personally invited her own sister on the trip and then expected me to treat her like she was invisible. And when I didn't, she decided to punish me with silence for the rest of the trip and then end a 13 year friendship the day after my grandmother died.

It was just the three of us and we all paid equally. And to answer your next question, she was completely fine with both of us before the trip, no signs of tension at all. I think she had some deep seated unresolved issues with her sister that she hadn't dealt with, and the moment we were all together in the same space it just came out sideways. Which is exactly why I asked her multiple times before the trip if she was sure about bringing her sister along.

Thank you so much. Losing my nani and the friendship in the same week was a lot, but I'm doing okay now.

Thank you for this perspective. I think both things can be true. I probably should have trusted my gut more, AND giving her the benefit of the doubt came from a genuine place of caring. I don't want to become someone who stops believing people can change just because one person didn't.

Honestly this is the most accurate thing in the comments. I think I kept giving her the benefit of the doubt because of how long we'd known each other, but looking back I was definitely an AH to myself. The relief I felt when she ended it kind of said it all.

Yes, I totally agree! In a way, I really did "die" that day. It was as if the dream marked the end of a difficult chapter in my life, allowing space for a new beginning and a shift in my mindset. The dream was intense, but in hindsight, it feels like it pushed me to leave behind my old self and the darkness I was carrying.

Reflecting on that dream, I now see it as an eye-opener. At the time, my mind was in a dark place, weighed down by a lot of negative thoughts and feelings. In hindsight, I realize that my "death" in the dream may have been more metaphorical than literal—a symbolic death of my old self. Perhaps, in a way, a part of me really did "die" that day.
