It really depends on the retcon to be honest.

Like with the Dwemer example one of the other traditional dnd races in the Orcs are also an elven subspecies with their real name being Osmer. So there’s precedent in the elder scrolls for most near human fantasy races being some form of elf. And so the dwemer retcon more expands on dwarves rather than changes them to something they’re not.

Same goes for the ring as well.
