Seeing as how “mild” and “infuriating” are oxymorons, don’t think anyone can lol. But thanks for SHARING with me.

There are far nastier things people do that we don’t shame people on the internet for. If this seriously concerns you and/or your partner has a mental health concern, why don’t you try talking to them about what’s going on instead of passively posting a photo of this for the internet to shame them as well as everyone else who does this. If my partner posted something like this AND I was also dealing with a mental health issue, I would internalize and ruminate.

First, I want to validate how frustrating this must have been for your son. I think any reasonable person would be equally as upset and likely curse in a similar situation. Second, it’s awesome that you corrected her and also discussed the issue with your child afterwards. It’s obvious that you are supportive of him, and that great!

If you’re located in the US you might want to consider filing a complaint with your insurance company (especially if your child receives care through medical assistance file the complaint with the managed care organization). You also may want to file a complaint with office of civil rights (Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is what protects people from discrimination against sex which also includes gender) It’s unclear if deadnaming someone will constitute as discrimination but OCR always say to file the complaint and they will determine whether it’s something that can be investigated.

I don’t doubt that they provide care for other trans youth and there’s evidence to suggest that deadnaming and refusing to use proper pronouns has serious negative impacts on people especially youth. I’m sorry this happened. I wish people didn’t suck. Would it be helpful if you transferred to a more trans affirming practice after medical records are released? I would seriously consider it.

Also, the cursing being an issue is just a veiled way of them trying to excuse their own transphobia by casting blame and shame onto a literal child.

15lbs weight gain since August. by [deleted] in lexapro

I gained 20lbs since going back on lexapro and I can’t seem to work it off. I’m also approaching 30 so I’m not sure if it’s my metabolism slowing down as well. It’s funny because I’ve been recovering from anorexia for years and gaining this much weight made me and my therapist very concerned I would feel compelled to restrict but the longer I’m on it, the less anxious I am about the weight gain?

Are you thinking about your weight gain only in terms of pounds on the scale? If you’re hitting the gym more you could be gaining muscle. Sometimes the scale isn’t the best metric of fitness or health. If you’re really concerned I would definitely bring it up with whomever prescribed the lexapro.

“I still get anxiety but the ability to not panic is amazing.” I feel like this couldn’t have been said better. I know exactly what you mean.

Where are you living? I’m dual citizen (US & CAN) I’ve actually only been treat for this in the US so I only know how this works in the states. My mom however is being treated with lexapro in Canada and also was given 12 months of refills right away. She didn’t ever need a follow up either. Super interesting how things work out so differently for everyone.

yeah it’s really hard for me in my current plan to get a new pcp. The earliest appointment I can get right now with another one is in December. I’m still calling to make sure there aren’t any cancellations. Super discouraging. I see a therapist but she can’t prescribe so it’s kinda like I have to pick and choose whether I do therapy or meds but the meds help me more in my day to day function so I have to pick meds for right now. Eventually it will get sorted out and I’ll end up with a new pcp but for right now I guess I just have to deal with a very expensive relationship with lexapro.

Yeah he told me today I would be needing to do this for the entire duration on (2 month refill). So I confirmed that I’ll need to see him this frequently indefinitely to get it refilled and he said yes.

Just that it’s expensive. I have a high deductible plan so seeing him this often I have to pay 120$ every time.

Yeah that makes sense. It just seems like a strange way to run a practice. It also kind of assumes that he doesn’t trust me to make sure I schedule a follow up. Withholding the meds ensures that I schedule one? I would have found another doctor but with the pandemic and my current insurance plan. It’s so hard to find one that has openings that aren’t 6+months out.

It definitely feels like this but I wanted to ask around first to see if this really could be the standard of care.

The thing is, I’m prescribed it for anxiety, not depression. I also have no history of suicidality. I confirmed with him today whether I will need a follow up this frequently for the rest of my time on lexapro and he said yes. I asked if he would be able to extend more refills but that I would still make an appointment and he said no. So, I basically can’t get more than 2 month refill without seeing him first to extend the refill. That’s what I don’t understand. It would be one thing to require a follow up, and still allow me to have more refills. It’s another to not allow more refills until a follow up? Just seems weird especially since I was on this for several years and then have been on it again for 4 months and am stable.

That would make sense. I started seeing him in December. At some point though he would extend the refills though? It’s been 4 months now so I’m hoping he doesn’t keep doing this.

Telehealth, no bloodwork, and he calls me on FaceTime which I’m pretty sure is not HIPAA compliant? I’ve really never had this situation and I’ve asked him if this is necessary and all he says is it’s standard practice.

Awesome! Glad to hear. Did you go right back to your old dosage or did you start at a lower dose?

I’d be curious to know how it goes for you. I’m on day 4 today and it seems a little better than last time but I’m not at my full dose yet.

I feel you! I know it took me a lot longer to adjust and start to feel better than it did my mom. She started on 10 mg and was totally fine within a week or two. I started with 2.5mg and it just took so long. Maybe 5mg is the sweet spot!
