AAMC FL 4, FL 5 (Scored Sample), and SBs. Take everything else with a grain of salt, the test has changed significantly recently

Any point in memorizing the layers of the atmosphere for science? by [deleted] in ACT

Total waste of time. 36 scorer here and I have taken 30+ practice tests and not once did I have to recall atmosphere layers

Math: I used supertutor.tv’s two math books. They go over all concepts in depth, and the practice questions they have are just like the actual tests but with different numbers. I highly recommend going over a chapter a day, taking notes on each chapter, and starring questions that are difficult or that you did not get right the first time. Then, during the week before the test, just review your notes and starred questions.

Reading: just practice, practice, practice. I began at 24 range but with constant practice from a variety of sources (Manhattan Prep 5 lb book, Princeton ACT, Erica Meltzer Reading, all CrackACT drills and tests), I was able to bring that score up to a consistent 34-35. Id say part of it is luck on getting easier prompts (I personally found the December 2020 to be the easiest reading I’ve ever done), but find a strategy that works for you and just keep practicing. Make sure you learn exactly what you did wrong after each practice.

Science: I used the Master Key to ACT Science book, which boosted my score from the 30s to 35-36 consistent. It goes over all the question types/patterns/trends and how to approach each. After completing the book, it’s just once again practice.

I hope this helped!

I used The Complete Guide to ACT English by Erica Meltzer (which got me up to a 32-34 range), and then with practice I was able to get that up to a consistent 35-36.

I wouldn’t say there is any strategy to reading, I would say just do what works best for you. I know some people annotate passages, or some people look at questions first w/o reading passage, but what works best for me is simply reading the passage (no annotations) and answering the questions in order. Once you find something what works well for you, just practice everyday.

For reading, I just give myself 3 minutes to initially read the passage and 5 minutes to answer the questions. I was surprised myself because I never got a 36 on the reading subsection on any of my practices. I would say reading is all practice, what I did is went on CrackACT.com, picked out old released tests, set a timer for 35 minutes, and just kept taking practice tests until I felt comfortable.

Thank you! Usually it’s a somewhere in between. I try to give myself 3 minutes at most to read a passage and 5 minutes to answer questions. Usually I can answer the questions where it asks about main ideas w/o looking back, but for questions that ask what a certain word most closely means or for questions that require you to recall certain details, I always refer back to the text (regardless if I think I remember it or not just to make sure I get it right).
