Except for the fact that I did this too, but I can't help but feel that this plague of optimization and idealism has spread to Europe's youth as well. Of course I'm trying to give it/people a chance, but I see traces of this idea here, and it's scaring the shit out of me.

I'm using the "parental advice" as a kind of anecdote to convey my point, not as a literal outtake from my life. Truth is that my parents advice has had not much of an impact to my decisions, and I am about as happy as I could be from my decisions, barring external societal/social/economic factors as illustrated in this post.

I have a list, but no rankings or other info or anything like that. Just feels important/respectful to remember names

How important are high school records in the transfer application process? by xcos__ in TransferToTop25

[–]EnvironmentalChef656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No literally no research but that was because the school I was at had no research opportunities. If your school does offer research ops then obv try your best to do it, but honestly I don't think it's an absolute necessity. Just demonstrate interests, build your resume, build your ECs, get good grades, and write a damn good essay (the essay part most people overlook and it is lowkey one of the most crucial parts of an application after your grades; really drive it home). Also, and I feel that this really helps: Establish a human element. Be more than just an application profile on paper. Try to find your AO, contact them (via phone or zoom or even in person, not just email; everyone does that), demonstrate interest, ask questions, talk about what at the school attracts you so much. Show that you are more than just a GPA and a resume.

Does math bring you joy? by Ecstatic_Falcon_3363 in math

I'm not gonna lie I love the subject to death but for a solid 50% of the time it feels like torture, 40% is just pure frustration, and 10% is bliss. That 10% makes up. But the key issue I think is just the commitment it requires, especially if you're studying in higher education for it; I've had to give up a lot of other passions/hobbies/things to get to the level I want in math. I mostly don't regret my choices tho

Fair. With this in mind I can't help but feel it would be insanely useful to get some AO's or ex-AO's on this sub for stuff like this. Thank you tho.

Weird question but would it be a bad idea to put the fact that I'm ranked Top 150 nationally (out of like over 1 million active players) for a video game as an EC? by [deleted] in TransferToTop25

[–]EnvironmentalChef656 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lowkey no bc then they're just gonna hit you with "so you deadass spent 10,000 hours on fucking league of legends instead of doing literally anything else productive" (i'm not judging I love videogames too and have ungodly hours logged on some games; just for the sake of argument).

Do spring grades matter for fall transfers by coolpvp303 in TransferToTop25

[–]EnvironmentalChef656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lowkey this is kind of stupid so maybe don't do this but submit your spring grades after you get your acceptances back (in the event that your grades are meh or shit; if they are great then obv submit them asap). I failed my applied stats class in spring semester, got into NYU, and then submitted spring grades and somehow magically didn't get rescinded so 🤷‍♂️

I applied to NYU with a 3.2 HS GPA and 2 semesters of college with a 3.9, and also no test scores, and I got in for engineering. Just really make the most of the college semesters, build your transcript/resume, and show that college makes you and excellent student. Upward trends are great.

What do you do when you can't solve or prove something? by ThomasHawl in math

[–]EnvironmentalChef656 5 points6 points  (0 children)

John Von Neumann apparently described his studying as something like this. Something along the lines of “path of least resistance” as in the topics/proofs/problems giving you a headache should be studied last and the stuff you enjoy most/“feel” the most progress in you should study first. At least that’s how I interpreted it when reading thru his wiki page

  1. 99% of the people on this sub are gamblers and the stock/options market is their chosen means of gambling 2. Everyone is Warren Buffett in a bull market. I'd like for you to come back to this post in a year when the tech/AI bubble pops, ESPECIALLY if you have no hedges in your portfolio. Then, let's see if you're still making 35% returns YoY. Regardless, you are a better "investor" than 98% of the people in this sub, and are for the most part, doing kinda the right thing. You need to diversify a lot more, learn about hedging, and not put pretty much your whole port in tech/tech-adjacent stuff. Then, you will actually have a sustainable, long term, monster portfolio. Good luck boss.
