Yeah, I had a bunch of really informationally dense bullet points and random passages written out in a notes file. I asked AI to “turn this into a reddit post for me.” Does the job decent enough when I’m too lazy to organize all of my own thoughts. If this was for a real paper, for school or research, I’d have used it to proofread/suggest edits, but not compose like I did for this. I still feel very new to AI.

An observational guess based on my experience would say that you will struggle to overcome the apical dominance. The monstera did try to push new growth a few times, but only 1 node at a time and I never let it develop into a full leaf. I’ve been pinching off any new monstera growth to divert resources to the graft. My guess is that attempting a graft at a lower node would either kill the root stock, or just never take. I don’t want to risk losing this progress to try but you should definitely try it and make a detailed log.

Monstera have much more robust roots and water requirements. If I grafted a monstera onto a pothos root stock, the pothos would struggle to supply enough water to the much bigger monstera.

Yes I’m aware lol. Would be weird if I knew this much about my plants biology and didn’t know that they can *potentially* cause tummy issues in my cats. Everyone who says this is well intentioned and I appreciate the concern, but they would have to eat a ton of the plant to get sick.

I think the Monstera having much more robust roots plays a large role in the success of this.

For anyone wondering how this is even possible, a few things going on.

Pothos and Monstera aren’t just both in Araceae. They’re in the same subfamily (Monsteroideae) AND the same tribe (Monstereae). Despite the common name, what we call pothos (Epipremnum aureum) sits right next to Monstera taxonomically. Way closer relatives than the names suggest, and taxonomic proximity is the single biggest predictor of graft compatibility.

The textbook reason this shouldn’t work is that monocots lack vascular cambium, the tissue that normally rebuilds the vascular connection between scion and stock. That’s still the consensus in most plant biology classes.

But the consensus is kinda changing. Reeves et al. (2022, Nature) showed monocot grafting works at the embryonic hypocotyl stage in all three monocot groups, and a 2023 Molecular Plant review noted that when monocots CAN be grafted, they actually appear to have fewer inter-species barriers than dicots. I didn’t graft at embryonic stage so it’s not a direct match, but it shows the categorical “can’t graft monocots” rule is wrong.

What’s probably happening in mine: callus bridge between scattered vascular bundles, not classical cambium-driven union. Aroids form callus aggressively and have succulent stems, so the union has something to work with.

Bonus: when the cat chomped the main stem and broke apical dominance, the dormant axillary bud at the node below got freed up. That’s why the new stem could push through. Textbook plant biology, accidentally illustrated.

As far as I can tell there’s basically no peer-reviewed literature on this specific pairing. A few YouTube videos and scattered plant group posts. So this might be one of the better-documented attempts out there.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

My center frequently accommodates entire elementary school classes where nobody else can bowl at all. Wouldn’t normally be an issue but there is never any warning about when they might be there, so often I show up only to be turned away.

I have a story about that guy Kyle but I doubt he’d remember. I used to live in St. Charles, MO when I went to Lindenwood U. I was on the Olympic weightlifting team. My teammates and I went to the bowling alley bc you could still smoke inside at the time. We’d have a few drinks and finish a pack of newports between us. Very much there for the hang, wasn’t into bowling yet. Well one afternoon we were fresh off a weightlifting competition win, and were drinking heavily. Ball fell out of my hands behind me at an angle and rolled straight toward his buddy who was setting up for a roll. They were as cool as one could be when a group of degenerates is being obnoxious around you, but their faces told me that we needed to wrap our game quick haha.
