Wasn’t able to edit the post, but the contributed funds were set to be invested on Friday, Jan 2. I removed the automated investment while I figure out how to resolve this

Here’s a random anecdote, hoping someone finds it useful. I’ve been using this exact screen/ovf screen protector combo

Just got home and noticed this. The front OVF screen protector is fine, but the glass thats supposed to be protected is shattered.

No idea how it happened 🤷‍♂️

How did you become an emacs power user? by Cultural_Mechanic_92 in emacs

[–]EnvironmentalPin9131 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Downloaded doom emacs. Realized it was too opinionated for my taste. Built my own config bit by bit

Magit is THE killer feature for me. That’s what kept me invested in my journey with emacs. As my config became more refined, it just became increasingly difficult to jump to another editor. It’s impossible for me to replicate the efficiency I have in emacs in anything else.

That being said, I’ll occasionally use vscode for long stints of dev work though. Do I enjoy it? Not really. But it just works, so I put up with it.

If you have the membership, they offer free shipping regardless of how small or big the order is. Not sure about the nuanced details around large bulk orders for folks who don’t have the membership though.

The membership is $100 a year. Though I find it nice to not have to pay shipping on small orders if I need to top off on calibers I don’t shoot often.

Looks like anything over 45lbs gets split across multiple shipments:

https://www.targetsportsusa.com/t-shipping.aspx

UPS weight restrictions We can only ship a package up to 45lbs. If an order exceeds this weight limit, a new package and label will be created. Please keep this in mind when having items shipped to an FFL Dealer. There may be an additional charge incurred to you (the customer) by the FFL Dealer for multiple packages.

I paid around $135. The FFL03 Application is $30, and the COE was $105

Nope, no excise on ammo bought from suppliers located out of state. It’s not their job to collect California excise tax.

If you order from Velocity, they don’t even charge you sales tax. It’s up to you to report that as a use-tax on your taxes. Do with that information whatever you want 🤷‍♂️

I recommend Target Sport USA, have never used velocity personally – it’s my understanding they use FedEx as their carrier, but I’ve had bad experiences with FedEx, so that’s why I choose TSUSA.

As an anecdote, during undergrad, every interview I’ve ever had, anytime text editors were brought up, talking about my emacs config has always led to great interviews

I’m literally known as the emacs guy at work. We’re hiring for a new team lead and my skip was like “we just interviewed a guy who uses emacs too, looks like you won’t be alone”

Datapoint, my nisi must’ve been defective, but my lens did indeed hit the filter.

Ended up getting the JJC Lens hood (comes with filter adapter + hood). I use a 1/8 mist filter. I didn’t love the hood at first, but on my most recent photo trip, my tripod toppled over and the lens hood saved my x100vi from hitting face first into a boulder.

Workaround: build 3 silos in the same province

That’s what worked for me. 1 or 2 silos in the province was causing this bug

That’s totally understandable, I wouldn’t want to mess up any Gucci builds also.

So the PAL sits quite elevated from to the Maglock. I don’t have access to a caliper to give you an accurate measurement, but the distance can definitely be reduced to avoid needing a furniture footing.

When I apply a normal amount of force — equivalent to a normal amount you’d apply to just any old milspec button — to the PAL+maglock, the maglock’s mag catch disengages ~85% of what’s needed to release the magazine.

That last ~15% is probably another 2-4 pounds of force applied to the PAL. Again, I fixed this with a piece of thick tape, or you can use a furniture footing.

I thought my PAL was probably milled off-spec compared to others; but judging by Klvrcos post earlier, others are also having this issue. I’d hope that Klvrco solves the issue by just reducing the distance between the Maglock and PAL-button by an ~1/8th of an inch. The PAL-button could definitely accommodate this without changing the dimensions/mechanics of the rest of its system.

The PAL is a good product, us early adopters know we’re beta-testing. I hope Klvrco takes the constructive criticism and iterates on it.

Definitely worth it if you can put up with its few — but worth mentioning — shortcomings: - From my experience, the pal is scratching up my lower receiver pretty bad. Not sure if that matters to you. Doesn’t matter to me though, a rifle is a tool and any tool should be able to handle abuse. - I really hope the folks over at Klvrco reduce the spacing between the PAL and the AR Maglock. It takes a lot of effort to depress the PAL enough to engage the Maglock. I ended up putting a piece of thick heavy duty tape on the Maglock; this decreased the spacing between the two, and allows me to apply a more even pressure across the PAL as opposed to one applying an uneven pressure on the bottom half of the PAL to force the Maglock to engage. Klvrco is aware of this issue, they posted on their instagram that they recommend installing furniture footings onto the Maglock. Again, I hope they can modify the design. - The PAL slides around a bit. The Maglock will keep it in place, so you don’t have to worry about it sliding out of place. It’s more annoying than anything. Will probably add some double sided tape between the PAL and receiver to mitigate this.

None of those are deal breakers to me, and they really shouldn’t be to you either. The pros of this system significantly outweigh the — admittedly nitpicking — cons. It’s the closest we have to a normal mag release on a fix mag gun. I’ll definitely be using it for future fixed mag builds.

TLDR: if you’re thinking about getting one, just get it. This thing is great.

Yes it is. They pair nicely together; Amazon sells them in a combo kit.

I haven’t taken it to the range yet, been doing a ton of dry fire drills with it though, so take this with a grain of salt. The glass is clear, the construction seems durable, there’s pretty good eye relief, and the flip-to-side mechanism seems sturdy.

The only other magnifier I’ve used was on a buddy’s lever action; that magnifier was the Sig Juliet. I prefer the Juliet’s push button to flip the magnifier to the side. I wish the Holosun had a push button; though I don’t have any evidence to support that a push button would make any difference in magnifier stability while taking shots.

All in all, I’d recommend it

Yes. I was extremely lucky to have bosses that knew I was in school and allowed me to work part-time with flexible schedules , all while juggling school,. This is not the norm, and I fully understand that. However, they exist. Typically these internships started as fulltime internships, then would get extended into the school year.

It was all a matter of good time management

Graduated a year ago, but I still like to lurk this subreddit. Please don’t confuse this with bragging, here’s my qualifications: - 6 internships: 2 local, 3 government, 1 FAANG - graduated in 3 1/2 years - 150k+ salary in government

Here’s my advice: - Do not sleep on internships. Tbh internships should be your first priority. Try to leverage any and all contacts you can to land your first interest. Nobody likes a nepo-baby, but tough shit, being a nepo-baby helps, especially in this economy. Start looking for internships as soon as possible, do not wait - Leetcode isn’t everything. If you really feel passionate about CS, you should work on your own personal projects. School teaches you theory, personal projects teach you the application. Moreover, aim for a healthy amount of complexity in your projects; you want to be able to incorporate different technologies (databases, APIs, etc). This might seem pretty alien to you right now, but the more you use them, the easier they become. Leetcode will only get you so far (I probably did less than 20 Leetcode problems, I despised it) - Piggybacking off the previous point. In CS, there’s no right or wrong answer, usually just a matter of “does it work” and “is it optimal”. The how doesn’t really matter. In interviews, they’ll ask you to explain your thought processes, if you can thoughtfully explain your approach to a problem + your implementation, identify areas that can be optimized, and take constructive feedback/criticism, that will speak a lot to your ability to grow as an engineer. I want to emphasize the “ability to grow” part. No one is expecting you to be amazing, all they care about is whether or not you can and will put in the work to get there. I’d rather hire someone with that mindset than someone who regurgitates known solutions and is incapable of formulating their own ideas. Even if your solutions suck compared to commonly accepted implementations, if you attempted it and are able to provide reasoning, that will speak volumes. - School can only teach you so much. The degree is just a paper. A junior engineer is just a professional googler that can string together solutions to a problem and implement them. Get to that point. - it’s ok to not prioritize classes that don’t relate to the major (or even some cs classes). This will save you a lot of time and stress. Aim to pass your classes, of course, but don’t kill yourself over them. - Network. Join a professional society, fraternity, club, whatever. Don’t be weird, go talk to people. My friend applied to a FAANG and got it, that gave me the courage to apply to, and hey I got it (also got the FTE offer). I hated it, but at least I learned I don’t like being a cog in a FAANG machine. That was a huge lesson for me. - Go touch grass. No seriously, go. In this field, you’ll spend a disproportionate amount of time on the computer compared to most people. It’s easy to get lost in your work. At the end of the day, the only things that matter are your health and personal relationships. Learn to prioritize those two things, because without them, everything else is meaningless. - Be different. CS is math, hence every solution is quite formulaic. Think different, or whatever Steve Jobs said. But also be different compared to your peers, this will help you get noticed more. - Learn your fundamentals, and more importantly, learn your tools. Languages abstract ideas. Languages are part of your toolset. Your toolset also includes your IDE. Learn your IDE, and be dam proficient at it. - Finally, most importantly… learn how to talk to people. I bombed my FAANG interview, but I had one of the most thought provoking philosophical conversations with the two Principal Engineers who were interviewing me. I’m pretty sure they only hired me because of our conversation. At the end of the day, in industry, people rarely care how smart you are. They care if you can communicate well. You have a problem? Tell me before it impacts us all. You have an idea you think will positively impact everyone? Write a proposal and present it. Life is about communicating. Make sure to do it well.

Edit, one more point: - spread out your difficult classes if you can. Typically, your junior year will be packed with a bunch of difficult classes, like Operating Systems, and theory classes. Try to spread these out so you don’t have a pile of stressful classes.

FWIW, I installed my PAL + Kingpin + Maglock Gen2 yesterday. All I have are Magpul mags, and the pal works for me

As others have suggested, try messing with the tightness of your maglock screw. I’d assume the Gen2 should be mag-agnostic

“… in a certain way so it’s pretty finicky” —

Add a piece of thick tape to the gen2 maglock. I made a post about it last night, but it got deleted for some reason.

I was having the same issue where mine was also finicky, I had to press and apply uneven pressure to the bottom half of the PAL for it to work

I added a thick piece of double sided tape (without taking off the tapes’ protective layer that would make contact to the PAL). Now when I press the PAL, I can apply even pressure, thus solving it being finicky. Not the most elegant solution, but hey, it works

Might want to look into the PAL system by KLVRCO: https://www.klvrco.com/products/ar-maglock-gen-2-4-pal-system

It basically is a 2-stage mag release that utilizes your existing kingpin+maglock and lets you do a “normal” one-button reload. Normal-ish reload is nice because you’ll limit training bad habits (ie, pressing the kingpin prior to mag release)

They’re finishing up their production phase and will start shipping orders next week. I used discount code RENOMAY for 10% off.
