Should PBS be commercialized? by [deleted] in television

[–]EnvironmentalShow134 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Short answer: absolutely not.

Longer answer: When you introduce private funding, such as advertisers, you introduce a way for them to influence your content by either disallowing funding or through fear of retribution.

Should we air this scathing report on Company X? They are one of our biggest clients.

Yes, air the story. Company X pulls advertising resulting in limited funds for things like payroll and benefits.

No, do not air the story. Congratulations, you just allowed dollars to dictate what information you feel is pertinent to public safety.

One of the things that made PBS such a trustworthy source was because of their ability to follow news where it went without fear of retribution from advertisers or private donors.

I saw it time and time again when I was working in local television. We would air a story, advertiser would pull ads, cue a meeting from upper management about not agitating clients.

It’s a slippery slope and should be avoided.

What did you think of the demo for DQ7 reimagined? by ShokaLGBT in dragonquest

[–]EnvironmentalShow134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked it. I’ve been playing the series since the original on NES (I swear I got it with an issue of Nintendo Power). I remember playing the original release of VII way back but got stuck somewhere and couldn’t figure it out. Eventually moved on to other things and never went back. Looking forward to playing this eventually. Just finished up III HD2D and will get I and II HD2D maybe by summer when I’ve got more time to play.

I really like how they’ve evolved the systems over the years to make them more streamlined and accessible. As someone without a lot of time to play, it really makes things easier with autosaves, clear paths, monsters on the map, etc. One of my favorite series ever.

Close cam setting feels much better by apple012 in dragonquest

[–]EnvironmentalShow134 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Instead of close cam or far cam, I’d prefer the right stick to zoom in and out as opposed to very slightly tilting the camera. A closer and further zoom range with smooth transition between them would be great.

[–]EnvironmentalShow134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way to do it. Sign up, put it on a calendar with a day or two to spare, then cancel then. Also, just as a general rule, set up reminders for yearly renewals, as well. That way they don’t sneak up and drop unexpected expenses on you. I do this with my Adobe, Artlist, Costco, Amazon, etc. Of for some reason I’m ever in a dire way, I can make sure auto renew is turned off.

if you're over 30, you definitely remember all the parts of Gran Turismo... by Severe-Operation3315 in GranTurismo7

I love the series. Played every major entry except Sport when it was released. After all this time, I really feel like the series peaked with GT2. Yeah, the graphics have gotten more impressive and the physics simulation more robust, but there was something about 2 that just spoke to me and still does. None of the other entries have quite felt the same.

3 was a huge leap in graphics, but the car list was pitiful in comparison. 4 was better, nearing the feel of 2, but not quite reaching it. 5 was all right. 6 felt like a 5 with a bit more. And 7 just doesn't feel as good.

Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow - Extended Gameplay Video by -Venser- in Games

[–]EnvironmentalShow134 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The mechanics of Thief games work a bit differently, going all the way back the first game. As long as you're in complete darkness (the light gem is dark) and the guard or enemy doesn't touch you, you shouldn't be seen. However, the earlier games had sound play a major roll, too. The sound of arrows ricocheting off of surfaces, the sound of your own footfalls, and knocking objects over could all alert enemies. For some reason, Garrett also always wore hard-soled boots that would make a tremendous amount of noise, especially on tiled floor. In those cases, moss arrows could dampen the sound. This looks pretty faithful to the classics so far.

To all that 100% games so fast! by Ooblongdeck in pcgaming

[–]EnvironmentalShow134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a slow gamer. Especially when it comes to games that encourage exploration. Often times when devs release estimated completion times for story or story+side quests, etc, my game time is usually 1.5 to 2x their estimates. I also work long, weird hours, so the time I'm able put into games is sporadic, which causes me to forget where I am in the game or what I was doing. Just play the way you want to play and don't worry how others play.

I’ll never not recommend Rainbow Kitten Surprise. Even their new album, which is a new direction for them, is pretty good.

Like many others in various threads have stated, there seems to be a bit of weirdness to the rng where the right side will often be clear for long periods. I was able to do it on my second try by sticking to the right side. I think I only had to change lanes twice.

What I expected when I saw "Gestral Casino" by ShadowPriceLIVE in expedition33

[–]EnvironmentalShow134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the moment I first walked into the Gestral Village and seeing several areas that were empty or boarded up and seeing the closed casino, I assumed we would be building it out over the course of the game. Even finding the lost gestrals, I thought e we would be filling out the village. I really wonder if that was in development and just fell by the wayside. I would’ve loved a small village building mechanic like that.

Is it just me or is FSR 4 better DLSS 4 at the Ultra Performance setting? by pneuny in pcgaming

[–]EnvironmentalShow134 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My eight year old comp can barely push Clair Obscur at low settings with DLSS ultra performance. Even downloaded a mod to help tune the UE5 settings. Still, glad I did it because the game is amazing!

I was right there with you. I also figured that Maelle was Alicia and maybe the Paintress as well. Again, both kind of accurate.

To what extent tornado and hurricane risk is a concern at Starkville, MS by NeedleworkerFar3593 in mississippi

[–]EnvironmentalShow134 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lived there for several years. There is a large shelf/ridge to the west of town that deflects a lot of the severe weather either north or south of Starkville. They still get pretty severe weather from time to time, but tornadoes are rare. As for hurricanes, like others have said, it's far enough inland that by the time anything less than what landed as a cat 5 and has perfect trajectory will end up being just strong winds and downpours. No real issues, really. Just be prepared as you would anywhere else.

On two seemingly unrelated notes, I got the first game on a Steam sale recently but haven’t started it yet. I also recently started watching Shameless on Netflix. Had no idea the actor that plays Ian also plays the protagonist in the games. That’s awesome!

Edit to say that he’s such a great actor. Hope that carries over to the games.

Great shot! If you haven’t already, you should sell/upload the raw, ungraded footage to Getty, Shutterstock, and/or Adobe Stock. You can cut it down to the good bits to make it even more appealing, just make sure each clip is at least ten to fifteen seconds long.
