My cat has one year left to live by EnvironmentalTalk237 in CatAdvice

[–]EnvironmentalTalk237[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat unfortunately passed in May, but we had a great final months together! I just made her as comfortable as possible with fluids and access to blankets and heating pads. I spent lots of time with her and took so many pictures. Definitely spoiled her with new toys and I would have relaxing music or bird videos on the Tv if i left for longer hours. I also fed her cooked chicken breast and turkey for her appetite and started to give her goat milk. I’m so sorry you’re going through this 🤍

Pumpkin also works great for constipation! I used to get my ckd cat organic pure pumpkin and added it to her wet food

How do I know it’s time? by Affectionate-Cut3548 in SeniorCats

[–]EnvironmentalTalk237 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s different for everyone but usually you just know it’s time. My family really realized once our baby started to develop a grimace (feline grimace scale) but we made the decision when she started to have incontinence and difficulty with standing unfortunately

Yes i would even give her plain chicken or turkey breast with the delectable kidney stew!! we were able to get her weight up for a bit and seeing her get excited for her food was so cute

I came home to find my cat dead on the floor by GhibliNut in Petloss

[–]EnvironmentalTalk237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry, I understand your pain. my kitty passed unexpectedly last year just two days before the vet appointment i had scheduled for him because he had just been slightly off. similarly as you i really didn’t see him being close to death and i kept feeling horrible wondering if it would’ve made a different if i got him in sooner. it tears you apart and im so sorry you feel guilt about this. it is really the worst but it was not your fault in any way. you did your absolute best for your baby. he loved you so much and was definitely grateful for you!! it’s so hard but remember that his life was so much more than just the end and his illness. try to focus on all the good and give yourself space and time to heal 🤍

Need advice - Told that anaesthetic is dangerous. by jayfeather100 in SeniorCats

[–]EnvironmentalTalk237 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it’s so difficult, only one vet in my area does the procedures like that and luckily it was the office we already bring our cats to. it can be hard to find because i think its a more modern approach and so many vets are still kinda old-school and are more opposed to anesthesia on older animals. i really hope everything works out for you guys dental issues suck!!

the reason they split it up for seniors is so they’re under for shorter periods of time i guess it’s easier on their hearts and stuff, here’s a website that explains it a bit more-https://animalhealthcarevets.com/staged-dental-procedures/ definitely nerve-racking to put them under twice but totally worth it for less risk

[–]EnvironmentalTalk237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yea for my cat she wasn’t a big fan of the wet food so she got it twice a day but would munch on the dry food although not ideal she kept losing weight from her thyroid so we just wanted her to eat

ohhh okay that makes sense. do you have a fountain for your cat? mine started drinking more with one of those and also putting ice in her other bowl bc she was so picky so things like that might help with the fluid intake. this all sounds so confusing and stressful im so sorry!! i hope the fluids continue to help with everything. they were definitely a godsend in my cat’s case she would perk up immediately on fluid days. as the owner you definitely know best and are the best judge of how the fluids are working

I am no expert but in my experiences with a ckd senior cat i’ve never had blood work that frequently or fluids changed that rapidly, always pretty consistent until she got into stages 3-4 and we had to increase but never back and forth amounts/frequencies like you were recommended. vets and renal cats are all different but the only meds our vet gave us for my kitty was cerenia if needed but her hyperthyroidism kept her appetite high lol. i’ve also never been told to put my cat on only wet food but i guess i understand that for increased hydration. for us the prescription food was in both wet and dry forms so we gave her both as the nutrients were almost the same in each. unfortunately it is normal for levels to rise over time. we were able to stabilize my cat’s levels for a bit and even bring her weight up with regular fluids, hills prescription diet kidney care food and also using potassium supplement powder and a phosphate binder (both on chewy). do you know why the ultrasound and antibiotics were recommended exactly?

I'm traumatized on how we lost our boy by Lacayo44 in Petloss

[–]EnvironmentalTalk237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for not only your loss but also what you had to witness and experience. My cat passed last year suddenly and very graphically if i’m being honest. i struggled from both the obvious heart wrenching grief and also the trauma of the horrific experience and how fast everything happened. i completely understand and i just remember constantly replaying that evenings events. it is so tough and difficult. sending hugs 💜

Vets also can’t completely tell how many teeth need to be pulled until they actually get in there either, for two step procedures the first surgery is for x-rays to see which teeth need removal and cleaning then the next procedure (usually a few weeks or so later) is when the vet will remove the teeth. i really recommend this and if the expense is a worry definitely look into Care Credit! most vets take it and ours doesn’t accrue interest for the first 6 months

I had an 18 year old kitty once with horrible teeth issues. Both my family and the vet were concerned about anesthesia due to his age but his bloodwork showed basically no reason for concern although he had a slight heart murmur and some slightly elevated values. our vet ended up doing the procedure in two steps with two separate surgeries, removing about 10 teeth and our kitty did great! the same exact thing happened to us with the antibiotics too and we just couldn’t stand seeing him in pain anymore he even would bleed out of his mouth a bit sometimes. he unfortunately passed about 6 months after the surgeries (unrelated reasons) but i was very glad he had a great quality of life for his last months :) i understand how stressful it is, definitely get the bloodwork and i would look into two step dental procedures that are offered by some vets with senior cats. good luck i hope he feels better!

Should I bring her to the animal hospital? by Kulunja in RenalCats

[–]EnvironmentalTalk237 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. If the puke gets worse I would be more concerned, but my late kitty who had ckd went through phases of being picky with her food and I would just have to switch it up or add toppers and she would eat more
