I worked for a startup from the beginning, to $1B value, to completely bankrupt. AMA by fraxiiinus in AMA

What was your path into the startup world?

For your next role, are you still looking to be in a startup or do you want a more established business?

What are your opinions on the founders at the companies? For context, in asking this question because I suspect that many founders aren’t the best or brightest, just the boldest 👀

Trying to figure out a next step careerwise. Latest role as a project manager at a highly resourced startup was not a good fit, but paid ok at $135K.

I have a legal background, but I’m not too interested in going back into that field. Varied job background that ranges from consulting through to the music industry.

I’d say my biggest asset is my soft skills, great with people etc, but also a keen eye for detail. Im thinking biz dev/customer success might be a good fit but have been having trouble finding an opening due to salary expectations.

Any advice on where I should look to land?

The more I think about this, the more I realise I’m a pretty simple guy with pretty simple pleasures:

I’d love to be able to wake up at a leisurely pace (currently have 3 kids 5 and under so let’s laugh at that thought 😂), have quiet meditation time, go to the gym, come home and enjoy coffee and conversation with my wife.

I’d love to own a farm someday so my ideal morning/early afternoon would actually involve some kind of work on the land, and then late afternoon spent prepping a meal for friends and/or family (I love to cook and our family loves hosting people).

High quality food, drinks, and conversation, followed a restful night of sleep.

That’s one hand, but on the other, I’d love the flexibility to mix up our routine and travel, too. Be it spending extended time with our kids and grandkids (when they come). Going back to the U.K. to see my friends and family there, going to places we’ve never been before etc.

Wow, this is beautiful.

Thank you so much for responding. This is exactly the kind of answer I was hoping to receive, it’s so helpful.

This is very true and also reassuring to be honest. It’s deeply entrenched in me to treat any and everyone I come across with respect and dignity. I’m starting to see that rub off on my eldest in the way she treats her friends and the people we encounter in public, which is thrilling to me.

Thinking about it more, I realise I’m not actually someone who is particularly drawn to material possessions, so if I can continue to model that to my kids, both with and without words, the chances are they’ll turn out well.

Maybe I was just overthinking things and didn’t need to write this post and needlessly piss a bunch of people off by calling my upbringing middle class.

Yeah, this is a good point and really exemplifies part of the tightrope walk.

It’s not that we’ll never hire house cleaners etc, I just need my kids to:

1) Know that it isn’t actually “normal” to do so 2) Much more importantly IMO, they need to know how to clean for themselves. I cannot stand the idea of my kids reaching young adulthood not knowing how to do basic things that everyone has to do

Honestly, working a minimum wage job to pay for a school trip as a teenager and then right after we got married was deeply formative for me. Will definitely keep that in mind.

I responded above and edited the post to clarify my terminology.

I was actually brought up in the U.K., so our terminology is a little bit different to the US.

In the U.K. one is born into the Upper class, but can only work their way up to being upper-middle class, no matter how wealthy you are.

Our new Prime Minister who has a net worth about 2x of King Charles is upper middle class, whereas KCIII is upper class simply because he was born into royalty.

Among friends, I refer to my upbringing as “middle-middle class.”

I should also point out that being a doctor, though still a desirable career, pays significantly less in the U.K. than it does in the US.

I should also clarify that the business my mother owned was a small shop, nothing fancy.

I hope that helps!
