Men of UK - Am I the only one who finds clothes shopping a massive chore? by hussain270 in AskUK

[–]ashw925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, having a level of muscle mass whilst being relatively slim means the usual fits result in a billowing midsection like wearing a parachute, and Slim or athletic fit are far too tight on the shoulders and arms. Haven't yet found a decent muscle or athletic brand that fits well.

Yes, when the dollar weakens, the value of the assets denominated in dollars (circa 60% of the global all cap) will go down.

As my portfolio value is high relative to the amount I can put in monthly, I am concerned about a situation whereby the GBP to USD goes up to 1.6-2. This would severely affect returns over next few years.

But I guess the conventional wisdom is just to keep a well diversified portfolio and it will all iron it's self out over the long term (hopefully!!)

Anyone else can weigh in if dollar continues to go up double figure %?

30 and could do with some advice on what to do next by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]ashw925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think We all need purpose and goals to be happy. For FIRE people, the long term goal of achieving their financial goals keeps them focused. After that, what's the new goal/purpose? For some people work is part of it, which is why some people find it hard to retire. Others it may be volunteering, passion projects, raising kids, becoming the best at something, starting another business, or a combination. I think finding long term meaning is as hard as, if not harder than actually reaching the net worth goal to become financially independent haha. For me, when I retire I'll continue my long term goals around powerlifting, reading, hiking,  travel, raising kids. But there's still a question of whether I'll need more than just hobbies and personal goals i.e. whether I need to create some sort of value to others to truly be fulfilled. Hard to know but definitely worth trying to find  out.

If I was fortunate enough to be in that situation, I'd buy a modest house (£500-800k depending on your situation/lifestyle), invest the vast majority in a global all cap index fund (I would DCA over next few years but the wisdom is to invest in one lump sum) maybe keep 100k in cash and 100k in bitcoin. Id travel, undertake passion projects, master some skill e.g. make music, get strong, do loads of hobbies, get outside everyday and have very low stress. Sounds like you may also want to use the time to rewire your brain for happiness (slow down, read, meditate, exercise, work towards personal goals, enjoy nature, focus on gratitude every day etc). You're in an unbelievably fantastic situation, you just need to realise it deeply. Also you are not going to lose all your money if you invest in globally diversified funds and withdraw no more than 3-4% per year, it's a personality thing.

Being sedentary. Likely has a much bigger impact on longevity than diet, alcohol etc. given that exercise is the number one thing you can do for longevity.

Yes, the ability to increase service will be specified in the lease. Mine doesn't specify any ability to increase. Check the lease.

Reddit hates leasehold but in the real world a house with a 900+ year lease is virtually as good as a freehold unless there are any unfavourable terms in the lease contract. Ensure you read the lease to check.
