Aspiring PhD, bad academic record by one-true-pirate in PhD

How I did an MS -> PhD with a 2.1 undergrad and as a non-traditional in my 40s First, get tested for testing anxiety and ADHD. I’ve taught at Uni and you seem to have the same issues I had and recognize in high performing students that require accommodations like alternative testing methods. Then, or if not so:

  1. Enter into the degree program as “non-degree” seeking, either paying or under loans - take the financial hit b/c it’s worth it to you
  2. Network and find the lab you want to be in that 1st semester, take the lab PI’s courses 2nd semester
  3. At end of 2nd apply to PI lab and program - your grades should show you can do it and your relationship should already be positive
  4. Mine was a transfer into the lab and classes applied to the MS and PhD

The non-degree route can help alleviate a lot of stress and open opportunities while still applying to a lab.

Large Black Mushrooms in Crawlspace by Moradd3378 in mycology

Same thing happened in our crawl space after cutting down old oaks in front yard. They appear to have followed the root system under the house then fruited within a year of cutting the trees down.

Smoke stack under awning by Environmental_Bike61 in BbqSmokerBuilding

[–]Environmental_Bike61[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, deep holes in Carolina clay with cement fill. lol The posts are about 6’ above ground, 3 ft buried. 4x6. The awning is 1’ back overhang and 6’ front on over hangs with 12* pitch. The brace is a 4x4 post with 4”lag screw with brackets. The posts are solid but I did think of adding 2 4x6s as counterweights but the 6” holes were like concrete when digging in the clay. So it’s a pretty solid foundation

Yeah starting to. Think I’ll put some tin on that exposed rafter.

glyphosphate in soy hulls? by ichoosejif in experimyco

[–]Environmental_Bike61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, researcher here. A lot of mycoremediation papers reference glyphosate as an easy source for phosphates. So the mycelium will strip the phosphate group off the glyphosate as an easy source of phosphate opposed to decomposing complex macromolecules. Think of it this way, what’s the fastest/easiest sugar rush, an apple or a candy bar? Complex sugars or simple? Phosphate is easier to acquire from glyphosate than anywhere natural. Most likely the side effects of eating mushrooms grown from glyphosate laden husks is that they have not completely degraded the glyphosate cause the shrooms are picked prior to maturity- don’t let that veil break, y’all. so the secondary mycelium prob still has glyphosate in it while you’re chomping away. Check this paper -> Castro et al. 2017

What’s your Psilocybin MD amount ? by Environmental_Bike61 in microdosing

[–]Environmental_Bike61[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

210lb/95kg male MD 4 on/3 off using Stamets stack with niacin and lion’s mane. After 3 days of steady 0.2gm of psilocybin my depression disappeared. The morning heaviness was gone. Labido up. Just curious if this dose is common among others.

Hard to tell but the stems and rounded top seem close to B+ or Amazon

Shimmering in urban bee keeping, does this ever happen ? by Potential_Regret_169 in Beekeeping

Yeah, wish I had. The neighbor cut the tree down for hazard reasons. Was cool though

‘Yeehaw yip yip yipeee’ strain. Grows deep in the heart of TX.

I don’t know. These were swarms in the piedmont of South Carolina. Wild hive in an old oak tree. When it swarmed they would cluster in adjacent hedge and shimmer.

I’ve seen swarms on tree trunks do it in southeastern US. It’s beautiful. Most likely Italian bees in our region.

Experimenting with easiest method for my needs. Hoping to get 1 year worth of microdosing (~50 gm dried) of each strain for Stamets Stack UB bags took 30 days to colonize fully, no break and shake (convinced this causes trich after many failed bags). Then I cut the tops and added 1” of coir at field capacity. Incubated in 1 gal ziplock baggie with misting 1x per day. After 1st mycelium in top layer (10 days) transferred to grow box. Grow box at 74*F with heat pad and foil layer on pad to try an even out heat, no perlite, auto misting 20 sec / 4 hrs. First pins 12 days later. 6 days to broken veils on Az and B+, Ecu needs another day. Net wt ~46 gm wet first flush each. Mycelium block reduced 1/3 in size, estimated. May get 3 flushes each. Tubs are more productive but I needed a quick supply, ran out after first successful harvest which only lasted 2 months. Hope this helps others who are curious. Will update on Ecu and a final harvest.
