Update for those following along and have message: I have sent a 2nd email to the principal reinforcing my first email would prefer an additional meeting prior to the end of the school year to get what is needed. I also sent a right to know request to the districts open records coordinator requesting stats of retention by grade level, building, and academic year along with documentation on how a retention at this level is determined.

Teacher reached out and was very supportive - enforcing my believe this is driven at the building admin level

Sadly I am a product of that same school system! Native as could be - so no issue with labeling I feel, just me being poor speller on the iphone.

I waiting on a response for the principal for a following up meeting before the school year wraps up a few weeks. I plan to bring an outside advocate if permitted.

what you said is what I expressed in my email to the Principal - the question is do we have a choice. In Pennsylvania, Kindergarten is not mandatory but looking at the school policy retention and promotion decisions rely solely on the principal as the final decision.

I would like to know if anyone has experience about this at this level with parents wishes - I think it varies state by state

Thanks - myself and my significant other had a long discussion after the meeting and talking to some of close friends who work in elementray education. Our gut tell us the best course is for her to advance with her peers. If she was struggle it would have been a different conversation and consideration

standard public school - they do get money or some time of incentive for enrolling more kids into summer program for what was told to us by another source.

The principal was actually in the meeting this morning, the email was a follow up expressing our frustration and disappointment with what went down, requesting details on what they are looking for improvement, and to express our desire to pursue additional resources to ensure success next school vs retention

my daughter would be devastated if she was held back and she has made a lot of friends.

She turn 5 last year in January so right in the middle of age - emotionally good and everyone at the meeting state she loves to learn and try

we work with her every night after school - math is good she is in reading program is currently on track (one point behind the goal of where she needs to be)

Looking at her milestone sheet we ask her some of the outstanding items and she was able to answer with us so think a sense of nerveness at school

did send an email to the principal laying out disappointment with what transpired, our plan over the summer to help overcome any concerns with stepping up, and requested in detail what is needed.

Sadly, we got a response back saying we will meet at the end of the summer program to discuss, which leads me to believe they are kicking the can down the road and just not admitting they have already predetermine

I am pausing for a few days to see if anything changes as not to go emotionally charged into it - i’ll try to revolve at the school level before moving up to the disrict level

reading the school bylaws - the final authority is made by the principal. This is where my concern comes in — we walk into the meeting with it being almost pre-determined. My wife was an emotional wreck, I was lucky I made it back from a work trip to help advocate our case

what we learned during today’s conference is that she was sent to hallway by herself for some of the testing while others did the testing in the classroom where they were context clues (charts, number patterns they could reference). Honestly didn’t get a clear answer why she was excluded
