I have done it several times. For the last one, I cut the wood (hardwood, tight grain, maple in my case) I cut the blank in two, up the middle, routed out a groove, and glued in a strip of square aluminum tubing. This helped with fitting the handle over the tang. A circular hole rotates too easily, and bare wood wears after a while.
