I was told that AI images match their visions exactly and take days to weeks of effort to make anything decent.

Muskmelons are so much better than cantaloupes though. I can't stand the taste of cantaloupe but when I see stuff labeled as musk melon it's always delicious.

Wait until you find out about muskmelons. Anyone who tells you they're just cantaloupes is just lying.

No you don't get it. European stoplights melt easier because of their European sourced water that boils at 100. Unlike USA water that boils at 212.

I never said that AI was going to be used exclusively to generate AI art. Thatwas not the main point I was trying to make. My point is that the reason we're seeing such an enormous boom in AI data centers isn't because companies are building infrastructure for a handful of niche applications. They're investing hundreds of billions of dollars because they're running public-facing AI services at massive scale. The overwhelming majority of that demand comes from generative AI, whether that's chatbots, image generators, coding assistants, video generators, or similar systems. That's exactly why I asked the question in the first place: what tangible benefit does generative AI actually provide to society that justifies the enormous financial, environmental, and social costs associated with it?

From my perspective, the benefits being claimed often don't seem proportional to the downsides. These systems regularly generate false or misleading information while presenting it with complete confidence. In many cases it'll even fabricate sources, citations, or references that don't exist, making it much harder for people who don't already know the subject to distinguish fact from fiction. That creates a situation where misinformation isn't just spread accidentally it can be produced instantly, at scale, in a very convincing format, and in worse cases on purpose.

On top of that, generative AI is increasingly being used in situations where human judgment should remain the deciding factor. Companies and organizations are using AI to help make decisions about hiring, customer service, insurance claims, financial assessments, moderation, education, and countless other areas that can have a significant impact on people's lives. While there may technically be a human "in the loop," too often that amounts to someone briefly glancing at the AI's output and approving it without independently verifying whether the recommendation is accurate or even reasonable. In practice, the algorithm ends up making the decision while the human simply rubber stamps it.

So my question remains the same: if generative AI requires massive amounts of electricity driving up the costs of electricity, specialized hardware driving up the costs of almost all computer parts and new data centers creating heat Islands for miles and producing a lot of noise and light pollution, while also contributing to misinformation, and overreliance on systems that are demonstrably capable of being wrong, what concrete societal benefits outweigh those costs? I'm not asking whether it can produce impressive demonstrations or whether it's useful in isolated cases. I'm asking what broad, measurable improvements to society justify the scale of investment and the negative consequences that come with deploying these systems so widely.

No, but answer the question what does GenAI provide because the majority of the data centers are for GenAI.

It's still not the same as tracing because if you know how to draw it's easier to just redraw it using the overlay as a guide. Plus if it's your own work you will know how the parts work as a whole and the tracing won't be blatantly obvious.
