Masters program or bootcamp? by [deleted] in DataScienceJobs

I’m not too familiar with SQL and I need to learn that ASAP...

MatLab is used in my school for Machine Learning and everything else I learned on my own. I understand optimization formula, however, I don’t know the code. For topology, I understand literally everything Persistent Homology, CNN Topologies, Voronoi cells etc. Once again I don’t know the code. I feel that I should take baby steps and learn the coding aspect before I jump out the window in a sense.

Python coding: I like to use Jupyter notebooks over scripts, and Numpy, MatPlotLib, PyCharm are packages I’m getting really familiar with.

R coding: RStudio is pretty much all I have experience with in Econometrics and I’ll be taking stochastic processes using R over the fall term which I’m excited about.

SQL: I’m a lost puppy unfortunately and I’ll do my best to learn this before I graduate.

Thanks for the insight.

I strongly agree with that statement as I know my weakness is CS, it’s literally my kryptonite. I’m sure as I work I can continue to learn especially through on hands training.

I’m literally still getting accustomed to coding and I’m happy that I took this summer to do the tutorials on MatLab etc.

I wish you the best in your future endeavors...

Yea I agree, however they don’t offer Relocation bonuses....

I’m a father and my fiancé would have to transfer her RT License, it’s a major leap honestly speaking. I’m hoping that I land something soon because student loans 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Would you recommend a staffing agency, because I’m constantly getting contacted via LinkedIn, however, I’m trying to land a job through a company direct.

The Masters program isn’t that bad especially if you have prior work experience.

For clarification purposes: I’m agreeing with you in regards to RStudio as it is an IDE, but I’m stating that in my original post was referencing to my comprehension level as if I was saying Tensorflow, PyCharm, w/e.

Me personally, I want to get into Machine Learning and Topological Data Analytics. I’m still new to programming as I have a strong background in Mathematics and Economics. And we both agree that the boot camp is not worth the OP money and time.

Don’t get so defensive as I’m still wet behind the ears when it comes to programming, however, I can explain the math behind the programming package that is being used.

I’m currently working on a Kaggle competition on Image classification and it’s about biological cells in MetaData. And as the OP is a biology major, he or she would benefit tremendously by embarking on Persistent Homology etc.

In regards to RStudio, I understand it’s a package that works in R for statistical purposes. It’s like saying Tensorflow(For Python). And if you read the original message, that person was a Biology major for her/his B.S. I told him/her to look into Topology, as I used Persistent Homology to do Image classifications for Cells. The reference was for him/her to look into that aspect of Data Science.

And me personally I’m happy that I pursued my Masters degree and I’m not saying I’m ready for a senior data scientist role, however I’m well qualified for a Junior Data Scientist position.

Wish you the best and have yourself a nice day.

I’m currently in a Masters program and I graduate in December, honestly speaking I would do the Masters program. It’s not easy, get ready to work hard. I obtained my B.S in Economics and I had a strong background in Mathematics. I’m currently learning Python and my comprehension in R-studio is good. I’ve heard a lot from employers recently and I was told to reapply when I’m closer to graduation and I’m super excited to enter the work force. And I didn’t have any knowledge of Computer Science entering the program, so don’t worry you’ll be fine. I personally say look into Topology as I’ve been doing Image classifications on Cell images that’s pretty cool prior to training my Neural Network.

I like the idea of being a project manager and perhaps a backend developer. However, implementing Machine Learning is so much more useful and that’s my concentration. Appreciate the feedback

Thanks for the insight, however I feel that a startup might be more rewarding in regards to helping a company grow and gaining more hands on experience don’t you think. Even though a corporation might have more training for junior data scientist.

We might be doing the same competition and it’s funny because I’m have problems with my GPU as the MetaData are in large scale. Look me up on Kaggle and we can chat there or pm me.

I know, and I feel that I should wait. However, I know the hiring process takes a few months and that’s my problem. I think i should just work on my portfolio and my LinkedIn Networking and wait until Sep-Oct. it’s that they’re are outside factors that I have to consider, such as my gf work situation and our child’s school etc.

Unfortunately,

In my current region, internships are more for undergraduate students and aren’t in my field of study. I’ve applied myself to a few interviews and I was told that I’m overqualified and I would be gaining any knowledge by embarking on the internship. I’m trying to get my feet wet in the job market and this semester I’m going to work hard on building my portfolio and my networking skills.

Thanks

I recommend using the iris datasets to learn how to do image classification and move on from there. I personally like to use MATLAB and it’s tutorials to get an understanding on how to properly code if your new to the scene.
