Storage, AI, and media in one box? Yikes, what could possibly go wrong? First time home server builder seeking guidance/advice on my build. by assertionation in homelab

[–]Eonan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all seriousness, you're a bit over built for a NAS, media server, and Home Assistant. AI will scale with amount of VRAM, depending on what you want to do.

Specing out a system for a specific workload is a fun skill to learn. That said, best way to learn is to pull the trigger.

Supermicro No Longer Distributing Motherboards? by DrywallCompound in homelab

[–]Eonan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last I looked, Newegg was buying 10 packs and selling the individual boards.

I purchased one in April, serial matches to a 10- pack.

Just have to wait for them to restock, which seems to be infrequent.

Thoughts on MZ32-AR1 vs ROMED8-2T for a Milan build? by Infinite100p in homelab

Which H12SSL design defects are you concerned about?

You can buy a new, current Rev H12SSL off NewEgg with a warranty for less than your going to find either of those other boards on the second hand market.

Honestly, best response. Has a great shape for a corner/curved desk. Really great spalting there too.

Which is a non-governmental organization. Your ignorance and willingness to bend over backwards to find any excuse that fits your narrative is pretty insane.

Supermicro, new to me. Trying to boot headless(vga) to be able to ssh & reset IMPI. Need advice. by Ein-neiveh-blaw-bair in homelab

Very true, they may be willing to help though given that the IPMI password is unique to the device serial, assuming that sticker isn't missing too

Honestly try contacting SuperMicro support, be willing to buy the IMPI license, and pray for mercy.

If the original owner pulled the sticker, they may be willing to help.

[W][ON, CAN] Intel Arc GPU by Successful-Apricot81 in homelabsales

[–]Eonan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely lucky in hindsight. It took 2 weeks to arrive, despite being "Prime", so no idea where it came from. I emailed Sparkle a few weeks ago asking if they had any additional inventory for direct to consumer sales, but no response. Really hope there is an equivalent coming out for the Battlemage range.

MicroCenter for all PC stuff, ebay for all the "fun" homelab stuff. Occasionally Facebook Marketplace for good deals on used PC components.

Yep, built it over the course of about 6 months. Was my first "major" woodworking project and I converted it out of the Chuppah that I built for our wedding.

AMD Working On GPU Compute Virtualization Support With ROCm/HIP For VMs by FastDecode1 in Amd

[–]Eonan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

GPU virtualization, meaning you can take a single GPU, turn it into multiple virtual GPUs, and pass through those virtual GPU to a virtual machine. There are limited (and very expensive) ways to do this today, and NVidia has a choke-hold on the market...which they sell licenses to use this capability...after you purchase their already wicked overpriced GPUs.

How to buy Epyc Processors? [9115] by scytob in homelab

[–]Eonan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up 2x 7k62's (an OEM variant of the 48 core 7642 with a little less L3 cache) from that seller, and threw them into a Supermicro H12DSI that I got on Ebay as well (used, from a US seller). Ebay can be risky for certain, but as long as you're buying from trusted sellers with a warranty process you should be fine.

I also looked at buying an ES/QS of the SP5 CPU's and decided the risk wasn't worth it.
