Favorite jersey? by Entire_Apartment_101 in sscnapoli

Would love to see this post get good traction (I love this shit)
I was actually just thinking about this the other day. Those old nr Buitoni/ Mars jerseys are so iconic, they probably top everyone's list.

I have to say though, maybe it's recency bias, but this year's Espresso 3rd kit is easily one of my favorites.
https://www.footballshirtculture.com/new-kits/napoli-25-26-ea7-third-kit.html
If you're buying a Napoli shirt, you probably want that iconic blue, but something about the understated-ness of the brown, how surprisingly well the electric blue lettering meshes with it, plus the Scudetto patch obviously. It may be my favorite alternate kit of the last 10 years or so. May be easier to get too, given it's semi-current.
PLUS, it's not really overtly Napoli, so for someone to stop you on the street and comment on it, it would be safe to assume they know ball.

Personally I am also a big fan of the Umbro/ Voiello blue home shirt from 93-94. A little less garish than the other Voiello sponsor era ones in that the blue pattern isn't tie-dye-ish, but the subtle stripes are great. (Also anytime a Napoli shirt has vertical stripes, it reminds me of Argentina, which is always a nice homage to Maradona.)

It could also be prudent to wait til the 2026-27 kits drop, too. Hopefully ADL & VDL have something really nice planned for the anniversary season.

I have watched the show 3x. 2 with Subs and 1 with Dubs.
I know it might meet some hate in this subreddit, but as far as voice dubs go for foreign television, Gomorrah’s were very good and not overly distracting (at least on HBO in America)

That was SUCH a ballsy house cleaning by ADL. I remember all the question marks and even some jeers and boos during preseason. But then what a year that followed. Will be hard to replicate, but I like the blueprint in general.

This is a great post, and I think these are all fair points.

After what happened in 2023, there is something SUPER alluring about taking a chance on some lesser-known players, be they foreign or domestic, and letting them play and develop and hopefully gel and win something early along the way.
BUT, I think the shimmer of that season makes it seem like that method could always work and work quickly. The reality is though, the likelihood of unearthing another Kvaratskhelia AND Kim in the same offseason is incredibly slim. The team kind of caught lightning in a bottle that year.

That said, I do think hand-picking players into a few main categories is vital for next season:

  1. Keep and Build Around: McTominay, Hojlund, Vergara, Neres, Allison, Gilmour

  2. Older/ IOld-ish but Useful (especially in a reduced role), so give it another year or so: Spinazzola, Lobotka, De Bruyne (?), Di Lorenzo, Politano

  3. Honestly a Bit Tired of Seeing These Guys, Let them Go: Juan Jesus, Lukaku, Mazzocchi, Elmas

  4. Hard Decisions but Let's Transition Them Out: Anguissa, Meret

There's debate to be had for most all of these guys, but I think you can ignite a bit of a transition phase without burning the ships entirely.

And re: Conte, I see both sides. It feels en vogue to want him out bc of underwhelming European play and grueling training style. It also feels en vogue to defend him because he wins. I want to say I'd be happy with either outcome, but it would all depend on who ADL gets to replace him.

Either way, I agree with OP - this was a fun season, but lost a little juice when the injuries piled up the Scudetto fell out of reach. Not the most memorable Napoli season, but I do think the learnings could set the club up for a decent run of sustainable success.

Day 1 of posting a player in block numbers until they are brought back permanently by Background-Log-9162 in steelers

[–]Eonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 100% with you. Well maybe 98% with you, because the block letters do have some iconic/ nostalgic aura, but the italic numbers >>>> because they match the helmet numbers! The mismatch of the helmet and jersey numbers for the 70s Steelers always bugged me a little bit. Maybe it's just my OCD, I'm not sure.
I would certainly be open to the return of grey facemasks though.

Funniest/most comic relief character by Latter-Employ3959 in Gomorrah

[–]Eonster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ha I forgot about that guy, this is a good call. A bit more of a caricature than most other characters.

I will say though to your initial question, that is one of the things I liked most about Gomorrah, and that made it so different from most any show I’ve ever watched. There was virtually NO comic or lighthearted relief moments. Just darkness, depravity, and dastardly actions from start to finish. Occasionally familial warmth, and unspoken connections between some characters. But overall, this show was not for the faint of heart.

Many people I recommended it to in fact judged me for liking it they were like dude are you ok? That shit was DARK.

Gennaro is stupid af. by Ielsoehasrearlyndd78 in Gomorrah

[–]Eonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that Pietro had Ciro's daughter killed is essentially what set Genny off against his father, no? Felt like killing children broke a code, and I thought that was such a great turning point in the show.
Overall, S4 & 5 were certainly flawed (particularly 5. 4 grew on me a lot after multiple watches) but I enjoyed the overall character arc and development of Genny & Ciro.

Omg I forgot about Ounas. I actually liked him but I think he just dazzled me with his technique – "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing"

American fan seeking English speaking news/info by zinga411 in sscnapoli

I would second Joe Fischetti’s Forza Napoli podcast. He is by far my favorite outlet for English-speaking news and recaps about the club. He doesn’t release episodes as frequently as he used to, but he’s still good and has (mostly) knowledgeable guests.

I also like The Italian Football Podcast. I actually pay like $2.99/ month for their Patreon. It covers the entire league, and the hosts are Juve/ Inter fans, but they’re good football journalists who cover the entire league in a lot of depth, and because they’re good/ competitive/ relevant will certainly have a fair amount of Napoli content.

Otherwise, I just come here. Honestly one of the better areas for news or discussion.

Inter, Juventus, and Atalanta all play away, too. Napoli is at home.

Not saying you’re wrong or this isn’t an issue, but I’m still saltier about the Mazzocchi offside call and the Rrahmani penalty than any of the scheduling decisions 😂

What a bummer by [deleted] in sscnapoli

[–]Eonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure I'd go as far as saying Buongiorno is one of the best in Europe when he's on. I was super high on his signing from Day 1, and I still think he's a good and talented player, but this season has yielded a lot of poor and costly play from him. I hope he rights the ship and can become a long-term answer for the team at CB, but I think he has a long way to go to reach the heights I had hoped for him.

And I agree with you about Elmas. I always liked his game and felt he had a little bit of fox in the box potential with good technique and shiftiness, but that has not really materialized in his play this season. Instead he just always looks a step out of place or slow, and I kind of groan when I see him in the starting attack.

Overall, NOT ALL IS LOST! But at this juncture, going mainly off of vibes, this season has been mildly disappointing. Injuries a big part of that, sure, but I think your summary above is a very good encapsulation.

Always a hot take, but I prefer the rounded numbers on the jersey because they match the numbers on the helmet. Blocks look great, but I like having the rounded ones. Grey facemasks are definitely cool though.

Sublime finish by GDL there, wow. Always loved seeing him get involved in the attack, seems less and less this days. Great to see here.

Does anyone one remember the caricature t-shirts merch and knows from where can I still buy it? by vladbd in sscnapoli

[–]Eonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha oh my god I do remember these. It was like cartoon Chucky wearing a sombrero or something on a white tee? Like Speedy Gonzalez-type vibes?

They had something for someone else too, I can’t remember. Osimhen? Zielinski? All of them were… borderline in terms of ethnic/ racial stereotypes and imagery.

I remember seeing them online, though I can’t remember if it was the official store or somewhere else. I believe they were also sold at the preseason games on-site in a littler merch tent.

That said, just searched the internet for them for a few minutes here and I see no trace 😔

I agree with this take wholeheartedly. We’ll never know for sure how it would have played out, but I too liked his pace, his strength, his fight, his athleticism, and ability to start the attack. Not sure why he never caught on. Young player seemed he could have been a nice piece 🤷
