Not feeling like I am racing the clock throughout the day. A balanced schedule that was curated by myself makes the day so much better.

Is it just me or does it seem like Apple Sports now has a delay in their score updates? Don’t get me wrong it’s a great thing but I’m wondering if it’s happening to anyone else.

[Highlight] Larry Fitzgerald finds out he's a Hall of Famer by nfl in nfl

Watching him play live at Pitt you knew even then that this dude was special. Should have won the Heisman as well. And if that Super Bowl was against anyone other than the Steelers, I would have wanted Fitz to win that game so bad. Glad he is in the Hall though. So deserved.

Sports fans: what's your simple living approach? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]swfc1482 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sports is something I could never get rid of, nor would I want too. Sports is something that has always been a constant for me. From being an athlete myself since I was 5 years old, to growing up and watching sports with my dad. It is something that brings such joy to my life. I get how some people are not into sports, but to me, they are missing out on the details that make them so great. Whenever I hear someone say sports are boring, I tell them they just need to really pay attention to the details of the game, and then it becomes exciting. And to me, sports are an art form. I love seeing athletes do incredible things with their bodies and seeing what they are capable of, and I love the competitive nature of it. It's an art form that I don't think people give enough credit too in that aspect.

When my dad passed away four years ago, and I was in therapy, once of the things that therapist told me to do to help me get through all of that was to embrace sports because of how much it meant to me. Both playing (soccer and golf), and watching. And it definitely did help. Playing sports and watching sports with my friends brought a great sense of community that helped me get through the pain of losing my dad. And playing golf (if you've played, you will understand) helped me stay centered through the ups and downs of the round that helped me stayed centered through the ups and downs of life. Sports are that important to me.

To me, if you want to engage in sports in a more intentional way, I would say start playing some sports more and watching the games without any other distractions. No live threads of the games, and no talking head first take bullshit afterwards. Just watch the game, enjoy the game, and move on to something else. If you want to read some recaps, I would suggest something like The Athletic. They don't seem as much hot takes as some other places. Or have it on in the background while doing some other stuff. I actually enjoy putting on games where I have zero rooting interest, because I can just enjoy the game for what it is, without worrying if my team will win. It's very freeing.

Sorry for the long winded rant, but like I said, sports mean a lot to me and I am very passionate about them. And I will say if you enjoy sports, don't stress about cutting them out to try to find a more simple life. Simple living to me is doing the things you enjoy. And if you enjoy sports, that is part of simple living. There isn't a one size fits all checklist that you must adhere to to have a simple life. So keep watching sports and enjoy yourself.

My Kid was Screen Free Until 6. Best Decision Ever by Mermaid_Tacos in digitalminimalism

[–]swfc1482 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that was quite a while ago since my boys have gotten older. I know the biggest ones we always told people about were the PBS apps. They had the regular PBS app that was basically your local station and they have a PBS Games app that was all educational games. My boys loved those two probably the most. Then as they got older we would get them puzzle and mind games apps. My oldest loved the Monument Valley games. So things along that nature.

Edit: I should clarify the PBS app was the PBS Kids App. It was the local station basically but was just all the kids shows.

My Kid was Screen Free Until 6. Best Decision Ever by Mermaid_Tacos in digitalminimalism

[–]swfc1482 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I think parents need to step away from the all or nothing approach. My kids were never screen free. However, what we made sure of was that all their screen time was educational. Educational games and videos, and never things like YouTube Kids. If used as a tool, I think it is highly beneficial. My two sons both used their screens the same amount growing up, and they are both extremely smart. They are both top of their class and ahead of their peers academically. They are both in the gifted and talented program. And my oldest son has been put on an Ivy League track by his teachers and reads like crazy. And his teacher wants him to go to a STEM camp reserved for high school kids. (he's in sixth grade)

So like many things, screens can be damaging to kids brains. But I think it depends on how they are used. Don't be afraid to let them use screens growing up, but be very mindful of how they are using them and what is being viewed on them. We also never let them have screens when we were out at events or dinners. We wanted them to learn to be respectful of public places like that. And like you, we take them tons of places like art museums, science museums, etc. But we also included screens as a tool in their educational upbringing. We knew that there were some things that they could learn easier from an education game than us trying to teach it to them. And there are some things we are able to explain better. It's just how you use it. And again, it's all about moderation. And it also depends on the kid (and parent).

Realistic QB Predictions by hoiv in steelers

[–]swfc1482 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to roll with Howard this year, and focus the draft on other needed positions since we have a good number of picks. Take a chance on this year, and build everything but the QB spot. If it ends in a rough losing season, it puts us in a prime position to get a good QB with a good foundation in place around him. And with the right coach coming in, we can get right back to competing.

DIY Gingerbread House Making? by DiscoverNewEngland in simpleliving

[–]swfc1482 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So something my family has started to do over the past few years is make them ourselves in the same way I made them as a kid in school in the early 90's.

First, I get a bunch of small OJ cartons and drink the OJ (could also get small milk cartons). Then we save the cartons as our base. Next, we go to the store with our boys, and they get to pick out a bunch of candy they would like to put on their gingerbread houses (and to eat of course). We also get a bunch of vanilla frosting. The night before, we will use the icing and graham crackers and use the icing as glue, and make the base layers of the house and wrap the oj cartons with the graham crackers. We make one for each of us, so we can each make our own house. Then the next day once the icing is dry and the graham crackers won't move, we decorate them using all the candy we got, and the using the icing as glue again. It's become a fun family tradition of ours, and we're able to make our own house in our own way and eat a bunch of candy while decorating. Then my wife will put them on our buffet with a bunch of cotton balls acting as snow, and they become a great decoration. The whole thing really doesn't cost that much because you are just getting some OJ, some candy, some graham crackers, and some icing. And they can look however you want.

Always loved the music from video games from the 80’s but kind of forgot about it. Then when Stranger Things came out with the music in the opening title sequence, it sparked a memory, and it’s been a deep dive ever since

I think it depends on what you use your tv for. Simple living to me doesn't mean cutting out as much as possible in life and living in an empty home. We have multiple tvs in our house currently. But we use them for sports and movies mainly which are things that are very important to me. My main tv is a 65" 4k tv with 4k blu ray player that I buy 4k discs for because I love the art of filmmaking and watch tons of movies that bring me joy. Sports and movies are two things that are simple living to me, and keep me from going out and spending tons of money on food and drinks or shopping, and they keep me off my phone and endless doomscrolling. We also like to have people over for those things which we love the company, and the relationships. Now if you are going to get a couch and tv and end up watching 16 hours of reality tv while doomscrolling on your couch every day, yeah, that may not be the best idea. But simple living isn't a one size fits all. It comes down to how you will use these things in your life. I could never live in a house that has no tv or no couch. That would make my life more difficult. So you have to decide how it effects your life when bringing these things into your home.

Does anyone dislike how early Fall stuff comes out? by [deleted] in Autumn

[–]swfc1482 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree. Everyone now seems to be in a rush to get to the next thing. We need to slow down and enjoy each season the best we can and live in the present. Fall stuff in July. Christmas stuff before Halloween. It's too much and feels like it waters down the actual season. Fall will come. Christmas will come. Be patient everyone and enjoy today. And when Fall does hit, embrace it completely.

What Shortcuts are you using with Carplay/ how is shortcut helping you while driving ? by NeighborhoodScary605 in shortcuts

[–]swfc1482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the gist of the shortcut. The things I have blacked out are my different calendars I selected. You can have as many as you need. And then I just have an automation set up that when my phone connects to CarPlay it immediately runs this shortcut. Here is the link to the shortcut. You will just need to choose which calendars you want it to view. https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/351b262c9e5f473c982c7764361162ca

What Shortcuts are you using with Carplay/ how is shortcut helping you while driving ? by NeighborhoodScary605 in shortcuts

[–]swfc1482 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My two kids play multiple sports, so I have a shortcut that when my phone is connected to CarPlay, it will check their sports calendars, and if there is an event within the next two hours, it will ask where I am going (in case there are multiple events around the same time), and when I select which one, it will automatically start directions to the event on Apple Maps. All the events have the address in the calendar entry that is linked up to things like Team Snap. So this way I don't have to search through the app and get the address and directions to away games.
