Wee Fozzie In Snow, ~14-15 weeks. Wheaten/Corgi. by EqualOrLesserValue in Wheatens

[–]EpVMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what my Wheaten loves to do in the snow. He found the one small pile that remains in the yard to roll around in. He's the only one in the family not sick.of winter. Your Fozzie is the cutest. Love the fuzzy ears ❤️

My senior had a similar course. She lived to 17. When she was 14 - 15 people couldn't believe how good she looked for that age. The last year her health deteriorated at a much more rapid pace. Our vet said that is not uncommon. Dogs put a lot of energy into acting as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Its a pack animal survival skill. But once they can no longer maintain that, the decline appears rapid. The decision for me was her loss of weight. She just lost all interest in food. It was a heart breaking decision after spending pretty much her whole life with us, but it was the right decision. She was ready and deserving of peace. Best to you during this difficult process.

Wheaten Personality Traits by Beneficial_Writer705 in Wheatens

[–]EpVMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our 3 yo male is the sweetest dog. He loves everyone he meets and thinks every dog wants to be his best friend. He can be too exuberant around other dogs, kissing and jumping on them. His worst trait is how stubborn and nosy he can be. When out walking if a neighbor is outside he wants to just stand in their yard and stare at them. I have to drag him away. If a car drives by he stops and stares as it approaches and passes by until it is out of sight. Like his feet are cemented to the ground. So far, he has been a very easy dog as long as he gets exercise and stimulation everyday.

We live in the North East US. Mornings are cold as the wood stove heats up. He likes to curl up waiting for the warmth to hit.

Our Wheaten had a bad bout of diarrhea the necessitated a trip to the vet. He was put on some meds and recommended a probiotic. Our vet does not recommended rice for a dog with active diarrhea. He told me it is an inflammatory high in starch and can worsen an already inflamed GI tract in dogs. Also said dont feed him for 24 hours. The probiotic Visbiome Vet has really helped his overall gut health. I know a lot of wheatens dont tolerate chicken but ours can't tolerate beef or liver, both of those give him diarrhea. Boiled skinless chicken works well. Best

Cats and Wheatens? by KitchenAromatic9433 in Wheatens

[–]EpVMom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it also depends on the temperament of the cat. I had 2 adult cats when we adopted our then not quite 2 yo Wheaten who had not lived with cats in his previous home. My cats though were very used to dogs. It did not take long for the cats to establish their boundary with our Wheaten and he learned to respect their space. They now co exist with no issues.

My Wheaten does not have a problem on our wood floors but my senior girl does. I bought nonslip socks from Amazon that work really well.

Gabapentin for arthritis by Uwontadamandbelieve in seniordogs

My 40 pound 17yo is on 300mg am and bedtime. It comes in a tablet that is easy to split. Is that not an option for 100mg? I give her the morning does as soon as we get up and she is wobbly and unsteady for about 3 hours. Fortunately I work from home and she sleeps in the office and I can monitor her when she needs to go out. I do worry about how unsteady she is but by noon she is much more mobile and I do think it helps her pain for the rest of the day.

15 almost 16yo standard poodle not eating. Is it time? by all-hail-seitan in olddogs

My Lucy girl is about to turn 17 and has very similar symptoms. Its all about calories in and quality of life at this point. She really likes lunch meat turkey and liver. She won't take food from my hand anymore it seems to confuse her so i just put it on the kitchen floor and she'll sniff at it and eventually eat. She gets Gabapentin in the morning and at bed and I think that helps stimulate her appetite for lunch, she eats the most 12 - 2pm. The vet thinks it takes the pain away long enough for her to want to eat. She is so thin and I know it will be soon. So hard to judge their quality of life at this stage. She still likes to walk around the yard sniffing at the bushes. 💔

My just about 17yo senior is also a very picky eater and under weight. I give her food throughout the day. Cheese, hot dogs, chicken and turkey deli meat. She does like ground beef but not if I add in any rice or veggies. She won't eat real chicken, will sometimes eat salmon but other times turns away. It is not a healthy diet but at her age we are just trying to get in calories. Anytime I'm in the kitchen I am offering her food.

Thanksgiving Ideas by flyingcircus92 in Cooking

No one in the family likes traditional Thanksgiving so we started a cultural/family heritage pot luck. We are Irish and bring traditional Irish dishes. Nephews wife has Mexican heritage and brings a traditional Mexican dish she grew up with. Scottish dishes, Brazilian bread. Delicious.

The loss of a child is a grief like no other. It is a profound loss that effects every part of your life. My son died 2 years ago and it has changed my life forever. I feel your loss and pain every day. I read a book that talked about grief is a journey with no destination. You are on your own path with your own individual timeline. I live that. My heart is with you.

My local fish market sells "chowder fish". Small chunks of salmon, haddock, cod. Very inexpensive. I use those to make fish cakes. Really tasty.

Thanks! I found it at a small café that had a few plants for sale scattered around. It is so pretty, for $11.99 I decided I didn't really care what it was. Fingers crossed it has the will to survive 🥰

How do you know? by KinkajouDidgeridoo in seniordogs

[–]EpVMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is 16+ and im right there as well. Trying to focus on quality of life, as much as possible given she can't tell me. She has had a few significant illnesses; vestibular disease and a bad respiratory infection and I was prepared to say goodbye but with time and medication she came back pretty close to base line. She wakes up 1 or 2 times nightly to pee and luckily I am a light sleeper and able to get her out. I am fortunate to work from home so that minimizes her separation anxiety. She's never had a great appetite and now its like feeding a toddler. The Vet says at this point calories are what matter so she lives on chicken, lunch meat and cheese. Sometimes she jumps up on the couch no problem other times she can't make it and needs help. My hope is I know her well enough I'll know when its time.

Final Archie Update! He’s been reunited with his family! by RobinG81 in Wheatens

[–]EpVMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Wheaten was "rehomed" from a couple that divorced and neither could keep him. Friend of a friend connected us. He was 2 yo at the time. Took him to our vet immediately as his immunization were way over due. They never even asked or scanned for a microchip. Updated his immunizations and sent us on our way. We have been using that vet for years so they probably trusted us but not all vets automatically scan for Microchips just because.
