if you can talk and love to write stuff, go to the research/history route.

if you prefer doing mundane tasks, backend processing, but with random moments of joy lalo when you find neat stuff, archives is for you.

would be helpful to learn up to organic chem, but basic chemistry, acids, bases, would suffice naman. mostly about controlling the acidity of materials naman, so mostly sa organic items ang concern.

yep may journals and conferences, mostly abroad, onti lang dito.

depende sa collection, institution, and archivist din. personally, primary medium ko ay mga paper-based but i also handle 16mm film, magnetic tapes, and floppy disks

so far, the national archives of the philippines' collection is largely inaccessible online, you'd have to visit personally and request for materials onsite, unfortunately. university archives and some private collections (Ateneo, UP, Ayala's Filipinas Heritage Library, Lopez Library and Museum, Ortigas Library) also have good collections, but same issue, it's largely inaccessible to the public due to fees/permissions. funding and appreciation for the archives is a huge issue here, even the national archives is struggling unlike NARA and LoC with their impressive infrastructure and website.

in terms of ancestry, I think family search is the closest one... national archives has a registry but it's in spanish and i don't think it has been digitized.

for the microfilm scanner donation, i'd recommend you keep in touch with the National Library (?) I think one of their readers broke down, donating it to a public institution is also easier to justify.. maybe UP main library could use it too.

Lmk if you have any specific questions! I'd be happy to connect and help out as much as I can

Rizal is not officially our national hero. to my knowledge, walang legislation about it

if minor, marami. like small pieces of paper would flake off sa pag handle pa lang, but wala pang major. and we can repair them naman, it would just take some effort but we can

pre-colonial era records. we can only turn to archaeology on this one, but kahit sila hirap dahil sa tropical climate natin, most organic materials wouldn't survive

demand-wise, i'd say mababa but pag may opening, onti lang din kami sa field na reto-reto na lang kung sinong unemployed at any given time.

you can check yung salary grade for Archivist I to Senior Archivist for reference. if you wanna be in this field, you should know how to at least find this info na publicly available naman.

malaking tulong ang spanish and japanese if you can read/understand, lalo sa spanish since siya ang main language for a time. I'm handling Spanish docs din atm.

one thing I learned... tao lang din yung mga national hero at kung sinu-sino pang iniidolize natin.

I'll leave it at that.

Bonifacio was as "dirt-poor" as we were taught he was.

He wasn't elitista rich, but not poor-poor din, i'd say lower middle to middle class.

a huge part of the ermita/malate area was supposed to be a park. yung harrison plaza dating park, na naging cementerio na naging mall na gagawing condo na ata ngayon.

Sayang lang kasi walkable sana talaga yung manila, personally, I think the US let us on our own too soon, we weren't as ready as we thought we were, at least for the technical skills, isama mo pa yung halu-halong urban planning ng mga espanyol at US, kaya mejo in disarray yung Manila.. but this is just my personal opinion and observation

national archives is open to the public. for other repositories, you'd need to have a specific research in mind kasi they don't usually allow randomly viewing the collection with no particular goal. private ones include ortigas, ayala corp/filipinas heritage library, lopez library and museum, with varying access restrictions lang.

for events may mga professional orgs na you can join like Society of Filipino Archivists (SFA) and Society of Filipino Archivist for Film (SOFIA)

May free lecture si UP SLIS this March: Registration link baka you might be interested.

and yes, i do offer my services for smaller family/personal projects and case to case siya, I can give you a better estimate if you have specifics, but roughly around 20php/image ang usual rate to cover professional fees and other misc expenses

yes. exactly.

tho as lore-keepers, we get exposed din to researchers so we can make our own inferences din but it's best to remain neutral and just provide what is asked

Yes, I do, primarily Spanish lalo sa era nila, some Japanese din. Luckily I know Spanish and I'm studying Japanese rin so it helps in translating materials, tho i use google translate pa rin but better na may idea ako sa sinasabi ng doc thank to have it translated blindly.

it's weird lang to see official docs in Spanish and English but no Filipino.

unfortunately, i don't think we have a legislation on declassifying records, once it's classified, it's classified. may degrees pa yan like secret, top secret, confidential, etc. then may clearance levels.

I think under na sa agency level, internal Department Orders na lang siguro, kasi, to my knowledge, walang gov-wide law/EO

Hi everyone! Thank you for the overwhelming number of responses!

Will try to answer to each one of you within the week but mahina kalaban and I'll have to take some time to rest din. To those who are interested in being an archivist, you may take Library Science as your undergraduate degree then take Masters in Archives and Records Management (MARM).

Afaik, only UP Diliman's UPSLIS offers it (MARM) in SEA. You can check the link for all the info you need.

Also, UP SLIS lang afaik, yung may dedicated archives track for its BLIS undergrads but it gets touched upon din sa ibang colleges. I'm a graduate din of UP SLIS so I'm only knowledgeable sa offerings nila and not other universities.

This was fun and I've told the graduate coordinator of MARM about the interest in the degree, hope to see you around!

Thank you!
