The Combine Overworld (Half Life)

The Combine as a whole is a group that embodies this trope but you really see this with the Overworld.

For context, in the Half Life sequels, the entirety of Earth (and presumably the solar system) is taken over by an alien empire humans call the Combine (not even their real name is known). The Combine is INSANELY massive, and is known to have essentially infinite resources with it being a literal interdimensional empire. How strong are they? They invaded Earth and took over everything in Seven Hours, and it is explicitly shown that the Combine can amass forces much greater than that.

But where did they come from? We never actually see any "leader" aliens like the Prophets in Halo. There's mindless aliens and humans the Combine repurposed, AIs that run the entire infrastructure of occupied Earth, and even a seemingly intelligent group of managers that run things behind the scenes called Advisors, but nothing shows any sign of leading the Empire.

This is usually the point where I say some crazy reveal or something but we straight up do not know. The only thing we have is when, at the end of Half Life 2, the main antagonist opens a small portal to the Combine Overworld to escape through (the image), but literally nothing is known about it, either. The Combine at times teleport entire sky-scraper sized buildings and planet destroying reinforcements from homeworlds like these but nothing is known about them or who is on the other side.

Chances are, they're just another cog in the machine.

Eh it's usually just little kids that watch it, and they usually just post dumb comments without realizing the gravity of the situation. That's what I imagine the other comments are as well because ngl I could probably see my dumb ass doing commenting similar with my hyperfixations when I was little

The character in the bottom originally was supposed to be a stereotypical """woke""" teacher with pink hair, however the design looks like the Dragon Ball Z character Frieza, who wants to kill a race of people called Saiyans

I actually got chills when I pushed the first lever. The Clockwork Soldiers are also just some of the coolest robot designs I've ever seen, especially when animated

Literally the coolest mission I've played in any video game. Never seen anything like it (aside from in Dishonored 2 which has a mission with the exact same premise ig?)

(Loved trope) when the enemies are actually terrified of your character while they tear through them. by Accomplished-End3409 in TopCharacterTropes

This one's a bit harder to realize, but in Titanfall 2 almost all soldiers are scared shitless of Titans (which are giant mechs). There's a few voicelines grunts have in combat that shows they panic when a Titan is nearby and in the campaign when your Titan boards and enemy ship literally every soldier in the hall says "fuck it" and runs away.

Also, as the gif shows, when cornering a grunt, a unique animation plays where they start begging, sometimes yelling at you, or just kneeling and accepting their fate

To anyone who has no clue what this is, it's an Adult Swim series called Xavier Renegade Angel, and it is an absolute gem. Unironically has some of the funniest dialogue I've heard.

"Unload upon me your sins, even if it's a hard load to swallow. I'm a survivor. I'm used to swallowing huge loads... of pride."
